The only problem with living for today, is that tomorrow always comes. Throwing caution to the wind, living in the moment, and seizing the day are great slogans, but they leave much to be desired. Would you rather seize the day, or seize every day for the rest of your life?

Finding the balance between spending money to enjoy your life today and saving for the future is an ongoing struggle. The sweet spot between today and tomorrow seems to be just out of reach.

Everyone wants more freedom in their life, but I can promise you that it is more important as you get older. Take the steps now to give yourself the schedule and resources you will be happy with down the road.

I believe you have been made the way you are for a reason, and that reason is to find your own individual way to help other people. Whether you believe that or not, I hope you agree that there is something unique about you, including the ways you can contribute and make a difference for others. It’s likely your path to greater purpose resides at the center of what makes you you.

In case there was any confusion about how much the world cares about your plans for the future, 2020 made it abundantly clear. My clients lost jobs, got sick, shut down their businesses, and became homeschool teachers almost overnight. This year has not gone as planned for anyone.

Despite the craziness, many people have thrived during the turmoil. They took this opportunity to expand their business, learn a new skill, or repair an old relationship. They can do this because they are prepared for what might happen.

When you convince yourself that going in a different direction doesn’t make sense because you’ve “put too much into this,” it’s hard to conceive of how different (and awesome) life could be if you made a radical change. Thinking you are indebted to your efforts of the past will only keep you stuck and unhappy, sinking more time and costs into the fallacy.

Don’t beat yourself up, and don’t live with regret for what you could have done differently. Mostly, don’t let your past spending hold your future happiness hostage.

The Boy Scout motto says it all: Be Prepared. They know what the rest of us slowly learn throughout our life: shit happens. You may not be able to predict what life is going to throw at you, but you can prepare.

Money emergencies are no different. The next demand on your bank account could be for a car that won’t start, a house that won’t heat, or a kid whose teeth suddenly won’t grow straight.   Avoidance of these expenses is the best strategy. Regular service on your vehicle and maintenance in your home will go a long way towards eliminating these financial surprises.
