U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., is highlighting the Trump administration’s impact on Nevada’s tourism-dependent small businesses at this year’s State of the Union, bringing the owner of the Stargazer Inn in Baker to the address Tuesday night.
Baker serves as a gateway to Great Basin National Park, which has over 140,000 visitors a year, and Elizabeth Woolsey’s inn and general store is one of its most prominent spots to rest and refuel.
In 2024, the park had one of its best years ever in terms of visitation, according to the National Park Service. However, Woolsey believes that the number declined last year alongside Las Vegas’ 7.5% drop in visitation. She says President Donald Trump’s policies are to blame.

Meet Shaquille Anfernee Murray-Lawrence, a Canadian bobsled push athlete at the Milan Cortina Games. He was born in 1993, and yes, was named after Shaquille O’Neal and Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway, who were teammates with the Orlando Magic and teamed up to help win Olympic gold for USA Basketball at the Atlanta Games in 1996.
Murray-Lawrence probably won’t be winning gold at these games — he and pilot Taylor Austin were 15th after Monday’s first two runs of the two-man event — but he can say that, just like his namesakes, he’s now an Olympian.

Nevada’s political and gaming establishment is moving to choke off a Trump‑era rival to sports betting that just had a breakout Super Bowl.
This year’s Super Bowl 60 rematch between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots drew a peak audience of about 137.8 million viewers, the highest in U.S. television history, according to the NFL and Nielsen.
But that national obsession did not show up in Nevada’s betting windows: Sportsbooks took in about $133.8 million in wagers on the game, the state’s lowest Super Bowl handle in roughly a decade.
