  • STUDY: Laser Protocols for Neuropathy

Knowing how to properly apply photobiomodulation is critical to get the results your patients need. Various irradiances of near infrared light have been shown to be beneficial for the treatment of neuropathic pain. Today Dr. Rountree and Kristi discuss a study on the mechanistic basis for beneficial outcomes regarding laser therapy by near infrared light on neuropathic pain. Follow along as they discuss why a combination of high irradiance and low irradiance treatments can be used to not only block pain signals, but to also alter the nerve’s pathology and inflammation to stimulate repair.

  • REVIEW: Laser for Neurodegenerative Disease

A 2020 review on light therapy mechanisms with neurodegenerative disease is the focus of Dr. Rountree and Kristi’s discussion today. Together they review what neurodegeneration is, what light and laser treatment looks like for neurodegeneration diseases, and the cellular mechanisms and the therapeutic effects we expect to see in relation to these mechanisms. Follow along for information on how and why laser therapy works. Dr. Rountree also has a few cautions and information for light and laser therapy clinics in regards to the use of photobiomodulation for neurodegenerative diseases.

  • STUDY: Light and Lymphedema

Join Dr. Rountree and Kristi as they discuss several studies on laser therapy and how it should be used effectively as part of a patient lymphedema care plan. Lymphatic damage can be caused by many factors, but one of the most common is cancer, particularly breast cancer. Post cancer, lymphedema can cause patients to experience painful extremity swelling which affects their quality of life and can often lead to depression. It is a chronic condition that is difficult to manage with conventional treatments. Laser therapy is a fantastic tool for relieving lymphedema, but only if used properly.

  • REVIEW: Inflammatory Arthritis and Light Therapy

Today Dr. Rountree and Kristi discuss a 2020 study on laser therapy and its mechanisms of “undoing” inflammatory arthritis and juvenile arthritis. Inflammatory arthritis is just one form of arthritis and it stems from an overabundance of cellular inflammatory signals without proper counterbalance of signaling. Cytokine signaling and T-cell function skew toward inflammation and tissue destruction rather than repair and healing. Laser therapy is an excellent tool for arthritis as it provides cells with photons for energy, stimulating the cellular mechanisms for repair and rejuvenation and reducing the inflammatory over-reaction.

They take a look at the dosage, wavelengths used, factors that may have tainted the results, and the outcomes of the study. Is full-body photobiomodulation really as effective as targeted light and laser therapy treatments? Can a light therapy bed benefit your patients? Can this be profitable for your clinic?
