The week’s theme is The Last Days.
Let’s start with the verse to memorize for the week, which is in Mark 13:26 and 27, which says:
“And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.”
This week’s topic begins with the poor widow’s offering at the end of chapter 12. However, the central part of the topic deals with Mark chapter 13, a prophecy about the temple’s fate in Jerusalem and the second coming of Christ.
Mark 13 makes it clear that the fulfillment of prophecy goes from the time of the prophet who made it, in this case, Jesus, until the time of the end, concluding with the second coming of Christ. This pattern follows what is known as the “historicist interpretation” of prophecies about the end. This is in contrast to attempts to place the fulfillment of these prophecies exclusively in the past or exclusively in the future. Using the historicist method of prophetic interpretation, which, in my opinion, is the correct method, one concludes that the fulfillment of prophecies occurs throughout history, culminating in the establishment of the Kingdom of God.
I conclude the introduction to this week’s lesson with Jesus’ words about the end of the last days, which are found in Matthew 24:37-39 – “For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
