Publisher's Summary:
In 1916, Mexican bandit Pancho Villa raided the southwestern border town of Columbus, New Mexico. Three hundred American soldiers fought four hundred attackers in a battle that ended with one of the last cavalry charges in U.S. history. Outraged, Congress ordered the U.S. Army to invade Mexico in pursuit of Villa. For the first time, trucks and airplanes accompanied U. S. cavalry into combat, practicing for Americas entry into World War I. Influenced by Sam Peckinpah, Rambo-creator David Morrell dramatizes this epic era in American history through the eyes of a civilian scout old enough to have been in the Civil War, the Indian wars, Cuba, and the Philippines. Knowing that his ways are finished, he teaches a young recruit about the past, at a cost he never expected to pay.

A book from my childhood, rediscovered
I wasn't sure if I had read this before, but it only took about 15 pages to remember that I had, perhaps 40 years ago. It was a bit more downbeat than I remembered (perhaps because I was a teenager when I first read it, and everything seemed more upbeat.) Anyway, I felt it evoked the time and place very well.
Good book!
One of the better books I've read and very well developed and researched by Morrell. Reminds me of his writing in the
original Rambo book. Not many people know that Rambo died well in that book and the story was fantastic and complex
as opposed to the movie(s). The characters in Reveille are well done and just beg to be in a mini series or movie
that stays true to this novel. I recommend this to anyone.
Interesting topic from a great author - MOVIE? (Spoiler Alert)
Interesting topic from a great author; interesting crossroads of history, the end of the old west and the dawn of the industrial age war in full fury. Loved the characters but hated, I mean HATED the ending. Since this was an early book for Mr Morrell maybe it is time for him to re-look this book and re-write the ending. I like the way the old guy is "Possibly?" seen later in El Paso, TX charging across into Mexico but the death of his understudy is pointless. This being said, (LOVE THIS AUTHOR and his spy novels), this book would be an INCREDIBLE MOVIE! (with some fleshing out of the story and ending; IMHO). I can see Tom Selleck as the Old Army Scout or possibly Kevin Kosner. Robert Duvall would have been great for this 15 years ago. Not sure for the younger partâThat is why there are auditions I supposeâ Well worth the cost of a E-Book (Kindle) purchase,
Not Up To Morrell's Writing Standards
But the subject he picked was very interesting for family reasons. Might not grab many but I was interested. Also, the Old Scout and Young Rookie is very timeworn and I did not get the Old Scout's behavior at all. Lot of holes in the historical backstory of Old Scout. Was he always a Scout? Did he just enlist for the Philippines campaign? As what? Private? And if he was a scout for the Philippines, how in the world did he know about the islands on the far side of his world of experience?
Five Stars
Love westerns, loved this one.
