Teresa de Grosbois joins Mark Alyn to talk about different influencing beliefs. We often think of influence as something people either have or don’t have. You're either Ellen Degeneres; or my next door neighbor. But, influence is your ability to create change. It’s clout, or sway. It’s your ability to get others to take action, to be successful in business. It’s even your ability to get your kids to stop texting during dinner.
You want something that requires influence. The first challenge you may have; is that you learned a skill set for networking in business that may work against you connecting with the influential. For example, we learned that it’s a good idea to offer to buy a colleague you’ve just met a coffee. Try calling up the CEO of Fortune 500 company and offer to buy them a coffee. Faster than you can say “restraining order,” you learn that networking is different with the highly influential.
The second challenge you may have is that as humans we have a lot of beliefs about influence and fame. Talking about becoming influential really brings up your self-doubts that stop you. You might tell yourself, “I’m not important” or “I’m not good at speaking in public” or “Do I have spinach in my teeth?” Those self-doubts become the lens you live your life through. “Could someone like me really be important, or make a difference in the world?”
One of the reasons we created the Global Influence Summit in San Diego was to help business owners and business leaders understand what it takes to run an influence-based business. And by that I mean a business that reaches many people, instead of just dealing with clients or customers one at a time. This generally requires you look not only at your mindset and skill set but also the strategies that you implement.
