There’s a lot of debate about what the song of the summer 2025 might be — but when it comes to the country song of the summer, I think we have a strong contender in Devin Cooper’s new single MEMORIES THAT MADE US.

And I swear I’m not biased just because he’s this week’s guest! The lyrics really nail the whole rural-Canadian-summer life that most of us have lived. I asked him to tell us what really happened with some of the lyrics in this song, and of course how he’s thinking of adapting it into his summer tour and Calgary Stampede shows.

Now don’t skip this episode if you don’t consider yourself a country music fan! One of Cooper’s greatest strengths as an artist is his rock influences and absolutely killer songwriting. Check out some of his acoustic sessions on streaming or live show versions of his singles — he really knows how to turn it up for a live audience.

The first time we met in person was at TIFF, at the premiere of SHARP CORNER which is now coming to theatres May 9. When I tell you Wayne is iconic, I mean Wayne is iconic. Two of his projects made waves at Canadian film fest, his new short EEL in post production, and film FAST LOVE soon to announce Toronto premieres and of course, SHARP CORNER.

We got real about how our Nova Scotian roots inform our work as producers and our province’s cinematic language — and no matter where you’re from, I think you’ll find the conversation cathartic. Everyone knows their hometown better than its misconceptions and headlines, and the beauty of film is that it captures those nuances and preserves them in time so we never forget what we’ve gone through. I loved this conversation and I know you will too!
