SkyCity's chief executive expects most of the central Auckland precinct to re-open tomorrow. It was evacuated on Tuesday when a fire started at its under-construction convention centre, and its restaurants, casino and the SkyTower were all closed. Firefighters are still waiting for the roof of the Sky City convention centre to burn out, 33 hours after the fire began in central Auckland. Firefighters have been letting the roof be completely destroyed and collapse, which will allow them to tackle hot-spots deeper in the building. Katie Doyle reports from the cordon and Dr Geoff Thomas gives an architectural perspective on the downfall of using straw as an insulation material.

Our reporter Matthew Theunissen joins us live with the latest on the burning convention centre Auckland Mayor Phil Goff watched the fire start and take hold from his office across the road from the convention centre. He tells Karyn what's happened to the guests who were evacuated and what to expect in the next few days as well as what this means for APEC 2021 which New Zealand is hosting. It was hoped the SkyCity Convention Centre was to play a central role in hosting the event.

Police and searchers have recovered the body of a 51 year old woman who went missing and died while completing the Tongariro Northern Circuit. Searchers have also had to rescue a group of mainly student trampers in the Southern Alps who went out despite knowing adverse weather was forecast. And they're not the only ones getting in trouble. Mountain Safety Council chief Mike Daisley explains just how many people are putting their lives at risk by failing to prepare properly.

It's been an historic day for News Corp Australia and Nine mastheads this morning. All front pages in print and on line showed blacked-out text beside red stamps marked "secret". Rival news organisations have coordinated the black-out as they push for legislative change to protect press freedom and force the government to increase transparency. It's been triggered by raids on the ABC's headquarters and the home of a journalist, after the publication of stories based on leaked classified information.
