Did you know we had truffles in New Zealand? Like proper, big, gourmet truffles? Well we do and they're just as hard to find here as they are in France. Gary Grootelaar is the lodge proprietor and chef at The Manse in Maraekākaho in Hawke's Bay and he's in full truffle hunting swing!

New Zealand's paused quarantine-free travel with New South Wales for another 12 days, and at midnight local time tonight Sydney will go into localised lockdown. Tonight we look back in time to 1939 when the first issue of the Listener was published It's almost a year since the Listener was relaunched after its near death experience when Bauer Media dumped its New Zealand stable of magazines during lockdown last year. One of those who has edited the Listener along the way is Finlay Macdonald. He joins Karyn to look back at that first issue and the way things were back then.
