Marvel and Disney Remember Stan Lee
Today, Marvel Comics and The Walt Disney Company pause and reflect with great sadness on the passing of Marvel Chairman Emeritus, Stan Lee. TO FEEL LESS DEPRESSED AND LONELY, LIMIT SOCIAL MEDIA USE TO 30 MINUTES A DAY, RESEARCHERS SAY
A number of studies have by now correlated social media use with mental-health risks, such as loneliness and depression. But correlation isn’t causation, leaving a bit of a chicken-and-egg problem: Is social media actually behind these issues, or are people who are already depressed and lonely just more likely to spend time on social media? A new study being published in December’s Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania has tried to look into the causal side of things, and see whether people may actually feel better when they cut down on social media. Its conclusion: “Our findings strongly suggest that limiting social media use to approximately 30 minutes per day may lead to significant improvement in well-being,” the authors write.
Xbox One Receiving Mouse and Keyboard Support Next Week
During its big X018 event over the weekend, Microsoft confirmed that support for mouse and keyboard support will be arriving for Xbox One next week, with a bunch of titles to receive the feature right off the bat. Among these will be Fortnite and Warframe, as well as Bomber Crew and Deep Rock Galactic. Strange Brigade, Vermintide 2, War Thunder, and X-Morph: Defense will also have mouse and keyboard support patched in later this month, while Children of Morta, DayZ, Minion Master, Moonlighter, Vigor, Warfare, and Wargroove will also receive support "in the future".

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation spends $200M on toilet technology
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates unveiled a futuristic toilet Tuesday that doesn't need water or sewers and uses chemicals to turn human waste into fertilizer. It is the brainchild of research projects funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the world's biggest private philanthropy organization. There are multiple designs of the toilet but all work by separating liquid and solid waste. "The current toilet simply sends the waste away in the water, whereas these toilets don't have the sewer," Gates said. "They take both the liquids and solids and do chemical work on it, including burning it in most cases."

This Taiwanese grandpa shows the best way to play Pokémon Go is with 11 phones
A 70-year-old man in Taiwan has gone viral for playing Pokémon Go with 11 phones attached to his bicycle. Chen San-yuan has made headlines internationally for the strange setup. Chen also keeps external batteries and charging cables on him so he can enjoy up to 20 hours of battery life per phone. Since first getting caught on social media and going viral in August, Chen has upgraded to a waist mount, so he can travel with his 11 phones on foot. His neighbor also commented on how Chen’s unique approach to catching pokémon has turned their street into a tourist attraction.
It looks like there's a problem with the hitbox for new Overwatch hero Ashe
As u/DarkyPaky discovered, the latest addition to Overwatch might need a hit box adjustment, as hers is currently very noticeably oversized. It appears that not only does the hitbox for Ashe’s head include her wide-brimmed hat, but it also seems to extend above her visible model entirely. Ashe has one of the smaller character models in the game, but as it stands she might well be one of the easiest to land a headshot on right now – a problem for a hero with only 200 ...

Social media growth is over in the U.S. — which is its most valuable market
Social media companies aren’t growing as quickly as they used to. In some cases, they aren’t growing at all. In the United States, things are even worse for them: They’re shrinking. Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat are no longer adding new users in the United States. Facebook’s daily user base has been the same for the past three quarters. Twitter and Snapchat have both lost users in the U.S. or North America, respectively, in back-to-back quarters.
NINTENDO SWITCH MIGHT GET A YOUTUBE APP AS SOON AS THIS WEEK
Nintendo's marketing strategy for the Switch has involved positioning the device as a games console and little else. But if an apparent leak is accurate, the Switch is about to get a new video-streaming option. On Saturday, French website NintendHome tweeted what it claimed was a screengrab of a Switch YouTube app teaser from Nintendo of America's website. According to the image, Switch will get a YouTube app on Thursday.
Niantic revives ‘Ingress’ for the post–’Pokémon Go’ world
Niantic has a problem. It's the king of GPS/AR/Maps–based "exergaming," but it's leasing its empire. Pokémon Go is built on IP it doesn't own or control, and a portion of the profits are sent back to Japan. A chunk of the proceeds from its forthcoming Harry Potter game, already a likely blockbuster, will go to J.K. Rowling. It's why Niantic is taking the time to remind the world that its own, original IP, Ingress, still exists. Launched in 2013, Ingress was Niantic's first game, and one of the first to ask folks to wander around their locale and hunt for goodies. Six years and several million players later, the company has decided to relaunch the game, titled Ingress Prime. It's hoping that a fresh start, a cleaned-up game and a deeper storyline will help coax back all of those people who tried Ingress once but never came back.
Red Dead Online beta start date, battle royale mode, rumours, leaks and more
Now that Red Dead Redemption 2 is out in the wild, fans are asking when the Red Dead Online beta is likely to begin. Much like GTA 5 and its predecessor, Red Dead Redemption 2 will have an online multiplayer feature called Red Dead Online. HACK BRIEF: SOMEONE POSTED PRIVATE FACEBOOK MESSAGES FROM 81,000 ACCOUNTS
It’s true: Facebook has experienced a number of security-related issues lately, including a breach disclosed in September that compromised at least 30 million accounts. But that incident doesn’t explain why tens of thousands of private Facebook messages reportedly ended up for sale on an internet forum the same month, according to the BBC Russian Service. The culprit likely responsible for the leak, Facebook says, is a pest outside of the social network’s direct control: malicious browser extensions. Google, which has over 60 percent of the browser market share, has said the number of malicious Chrome extension downloads has decreased significantly over the past several years, but this breach proves malware-packed browser tools remain an issue.
Apple has a problem it doesn't want to talk about
The era of rapid iPhone growth ended years ago. Now Apple is making a change to ensure it doesn't have to talk as much about that problem. On a conference call Thursday, top Apple executives laid out their plans to stop disclosing the number of iPhones, iPads and Macs it sells each quarter. It's a move that shocked analysts and only added to jitters around a mixed earnings report. Daniel Ives, an analyst with Wedbush, called the announcement a "jaw dropper" in an investor note Friday morning, particularly because Apple is at a "critical juncture." He said Apple is trying to make up for slowing unit sales growth by charging more for its lineup of devices.
Diablo Immortal, A New RPG, Announced For Mobile At BlizzCon 2018
Diablo was for much of its life a PC-only franchise. Now, with Diablo III having expanded to consoles--including, as of today, Nintendo Switch--Blizzard has its eyes set on what might be its most difficult adaptation of the action RPG yet: mobile. During the BlizzCon 2018 opening ceremony, Blizzard revealed that it is developing a brand-new Diablo game to mobile platforms. Blizzard said it "want[s] to do it in a way that's true to Blizzard, putting gameplay first, in a way that feels right for Diablo." It's described as a full-fledged action RPG you can play everywhere with everyone. It's being developed in collaboration with NetEase. The Chinese company has previously helped to bring a number of Blizzard's games to China.

We’re used to hearing about supercomputers such as IBM’s 200-petaflop Summit machine, but the million-processor-core ‘Spiking Neural Network Architecture’ machine, or ‘SpiNNaker,’ is a bit different. It’s the world’s largest neuromorphic supercomputer, designed to copy the workings of the human brain and unlock its secrets, and it’s been switched on for the first time.

Flickr is making some big changes, following its acquisition by SmugMug earlier this year. But more notably, it’s also revamping its account structure to impose increased limits for free users, while rolling out unlimited storage for Pro subscribers.

Google has launched reCAPTCHA version 3 that is a complete overhaul of the reCAPTCHA technology. The company first introduced this background check system back in 2007 and this is the 3rd major overhaul being sent to it. reCAPTCHA itself was initially introduced in 2014. Designed to ward off bots on the internet, reCAPTCHA has proven to be useful but extremely annoying. However, with reCAPTCHA v3 Google aims to reduce this annoyance by no longer requiring any user interaction. No more squinting of eyes to read garbled codes or clicking on images of billboards.
Twitch CEO plots expansion beyond game streaming as Facebook and media companies enter the market
Twitch, the Amazon-owned video streaming service where viewers watch other people play video games, has outgrown its niche roots to the point that 1 million people on average are using it at any given time. The broader category of esports has blossomed into an international phenomenon, with research firm Newzoo predicting the market will grow 55 percent by 2020 to $1.4 billion. That kind of success brings with it competition from big media and tech companies looking for new areas of growth. "One of the biggest changes for Twitch over the past year is just the way that video games and streaming have started to cross over into the mainstream," CEO and co-founder Emmett Shear told CNBC in an interview last weekend in San Jose, California, at the company's annual TwitchCon event.

Apple's new MacBook Air blows the regular MacBook out of the water on price and power
Apple finally gave the MacBook Air a big upgrade. I only spent a few minutes with it Tuesday, but I already think it's the Apple laptop that most people will probably buy. By size, it fits right between the regular MacBook and the MacBook Pro. In cost, it's cheaper than both. It starts at $1,199 — admittedly more expensive than the original $999 MacBook Air — but it's more powerful than the smaller standard MacBook, which starts at $1,299. It's sort of weird, and I can't think of many reasons to buy the smaller and more expensive MacBook, unless you just want a bit more portability. Given that iPad sales have continued to outpace Mac sales, however, its strongest competition might be Apple's new iPad Pros.
Apple iPad Pro specs compared: how the iPads stand out
Apple announced new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros in New York today, which now come with Face ID, a USB-C charging port, and a new “Liquid Retina” display. Aesthetically, they’ve got slimmer bezels that only come in black, like the new MacBook Airs. The black bezels, when paired with the Smart Keyboard Folio, make the iPad Pro look closer to a laptop than it ever has before. They also allow for the 11-inch model display to fit a bigger screen into the same overall dimensions as the prior 10.5-inch model. The iPads also lose their home buttons entirely in favor of the iOS 12 gesture controls found in Apple’s new iPhones. Swiping across the various edges of the screen now brings up the home screen, lets you switch apps, and pull up the Control Center, Notification Center, and Dock.
Apple Launches New Mac Mini: Up to 6 Cores, 64 GB RAM, 2 TB SSD, & TB3
Apple on Tuesday introduced its first new small form-factor PC in four years. The new Mac mini is based on Intel’s latest Coffee Lake processors with up to six cores and improves the SFF system in almost all ways possible, making the miniature PC almost as capable as regular desktops. With that said, the considerably higher performance enabled by the new Mac mini also comes at higher price points when compared to the predecessors. Apple’s Mac mini desktops are designed for SOHO market segment as well as everyday workloads that normally do not require very capable hardware. Meanwhile, historically Apple used mobile processors for its Mac mini, which the company found good enough for the market segment. With its 2018 SFF desktops Apple is changing the game here: the company now calls its Mac mini a “workhorse” and therefore uses Intel’s custom 8th Gen Core CPUs with four or six cores operating at 4.6 GHz Turbo Boost frequency. In a bid to cool the processor down, Apple uses a brand-new cooling system featuring a blower.

IBM to acquire Red Hat in deal valued at $34 billion
IBM is acquiring Red Hat, a major distributor of open-source software and technology, in a deal valued around $34 billion, the companies announced on Sunday. According to a joint statement, IBM will pay cash to buy all shares in Red Hat at $190 each. Shares in Red Hat closed at $116.68 on Friday before the deal was announced. The open source, enterprise software maker will become a unit of IBM's Hybrid Cloud division, with Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst joining IBM's senior management team and reporting to CEO Ginni Rometty.

OnePlus 6T review: Pixel 3’s problems might make this the phone to own
OnePlus’ second flagship smartphone of 2018 has gotten off to a rocky start, to say the least. First of all, just about everything there is to know about the OnePlus 6T leaked long before the phone was announced on Monday. Of course, that pretty much goes without saying at this point, since details surrounding flagship phones always leak in advance. The real trouble arrived when it came time to schedule the OnePlus 6T announcement event. First, OnePlus reportedly pushed back its planned unveiling to avoid overlapping with Google’s Pixel 3 launch. Then, after landing on the date October 30th for its big reveal, Apple announced that its October press conference would be held on the same date. Competing with Apple for media coverage is obviously ill-advised, so the company bumped up its event to today, October 29th.

iOS 12 stops police unlocking your iPhone
Apple is constantly working to improve the security on its devices and protect our data. This has led to improved encryption and a shift from simple passcodes to fingerprint and most recently facial recognition on its smartphones. The security measures are so good, police seizing an iPhone have to be careful not to look directly at it. There is one thorn in Apple's side when it comes to security, though, and that's the company Grayshift. Founded in 2016, it offers law enforcement agencies around the world an iPhone unlocking device called GrayKey. It works, or at least it did until now, and has won Grayshift many customers. However, that all changed with iOS 12.
Snap is still losing users, blames its Android app
Snapchat's poor Android app is still proving to be a major problem for the company. The app lost users for the second straight quarter, with its daily active users declining by 2 million, and Snapchat's lackluster Android app may be to blame. "The decline was primarily among Android users," CEO Evan Spiegel said in his prepared remarks during the company's third-quarter earnings call.
It Sure Seems Like 'Fallout 76' Will Be The 'No Man's Sky' Of 2018
Just before the launch of No Man's Sky back in August of 2016, Hello Games chief Sean Murray released an open letter to fans. There was something just a tiny bit odd about the note. After all, it opened with this line: I feel sick writing this. You are about to play 'No Man's Sky' and I don't know what you'll think. "Believe the hype" this was decidedly not. And sure enough, upon its release the gaming community descended into that place only the gaming community really can: Collective fury, a sense of betrayal, and outrage all mixed into a frothing stew that quickly bubbled over.
'Pokémon Go' will track your activity without launching the app
Pokémon Go has encouraged more than a few people to step up their physical exercise, and Niantic wants to reward that. It's launching an Adventure Sync feature in its augmented reality games (starting with Pokémon Go) that syncs with Google Fit and iOS' HealthKit to translate steps into game progress without having the app open or using a smartwatch. If you regularly go for a run before work, you'll see that reflected in more Pokémon candy or more efficient egg hatching. You'll get weekly milestones, too.

Soundcloud Links Have Been Integrated into Instagram Stories
Soundcloud artists, rejoice. Instagram has announced it will now allow SoundCloud links to be shared through its Stories feature. The process will work similarly as it does with Spotify, which Instagram introduced to its Stories platform earlier this year.
Twitter tests status updates and ‘ice breaker’ tweets
Last month, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey told the House Committee on Energy and Commerce that one of his company's goals is to "increase the health of public conversation" on its platform. And it's a talking point Twitter has come back to throughout the year. In March, it reached out to experts for ideas on how to promote healthy, open and civil conversations online and in September, the company sought feedback on a proposed policy that would ban dehumanizing speech. Now, the company is testing a handful of new features aimed at encouraging users to talk to each other.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is set to release on Switch this December but it seems the growing roster is getting bigger, if this latest leak is to be believed. An unnamed person who claims to have access to promotional material took photos of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster collage on their Snapchat. The post was deleted, but later posted on message boards like 4Chan and Resetera. Nintendo has not officially confirmed any of these characters for the game at this time.
Fortnite’s map is being infested with hordes of monsters
Fortnite is getting into the Halloween spirit with the addition of undead opponents to its popular battle royale mode, marking a major moment in the game mode’s history where players can fight computer-generated enemies.
