  • Get Ready Before the Knock: Why Opportunity Comes Too Late to Prepare [Ep. 33]

"When opportunity comes, it's too late to prepare." quote by Terri Savelle Foy, I heard that line and had to stop, because I'd spent years thinking opportunities just find us, and that we scramble to get ready once they do.

In this episode I tell you about the time in banking when I wanted to become a relationship manager and got told, flat out, that I wasn't qualified. I could've walked away. Instead I asked what I needed to do, took action and reached back out six months later. He was just about to go looking for someone. Because I'd prepared, the door opened. If I'd waited, he never would've thought of me at all.

So this one is about getting ready before the knock comes — whether that's a role, a referral, or the book you keep saying you'll write someday. Start the thing now, even ten messy minutes a day, so that when someone says "are you ready?," you can say: "Yes. I'm ready."

  • Say Yes Before You're Ready: What a Room of 4,000 Women Taught Me About Showing Up [Ep. 32]

If you're waiting to feel fully supported before you take the leap, waiting until you know who else is going, until the plan is complete, until it feels safe, you might be waiting a long time.

Sometimes you say yes first, and your community finds you later.

Here's the part that surprised me most. If you know me, you know I'm a planner. I like structure. I like knowing exactly what I'm walking into, and building a business has been hard for me because so much of it is the unknown. For a planner, leaving white space isn't the absence of a plan. It's a different kind of plan. And I don't think I've ever felt like I belonged somewhere so quickly without having earned it through a checklist.

So this one's a permission slip. Fill your cup, don't leave with a longer to-do list.

Three things to try at your next event

    1. Book your non-negotiables, then stop. Plan the one or two things you truly want. Leave everything else open and let it happen to you.
    2. Notice one moment you'd normally judge — and try it yourself. For me it was taking pictures. For you it might be dancing, asking a bold question, or sitting with a stranger at lunch. Find the thing you'd usually roll your eyes at, and do it.
    3. Before you leave, ask: did I fill my cup, or did I just add to my list? Let that be how you measure a good event — not how many business cards you collected.

  • Taking Off the Golden Handcuffs: How Joanna Aguirre Left Corporate to Build a Legacy [Ep. 31]

"Golden handcuffs." That's what Joanna Aguirre calls the good salary and the beautiful lifestyle that kept her tied to a corporate job that was quietly wearing her down.

So she did something most of us only think about. She saved aggressively for a year and a half, left corporate, took an intentional sabbatical, and moved her whole life from Chicago to Los Angeles.

Out of that leap came Sovereign Good, the philanthropic advisory firm she co-founded with three partners. Think of it this way: when Dolly Parton built her Imagination Library, she didn't do it alone, she had a team building the strategy and the research so the money actually did what it was meant to do. Sovereign Good is that team, for donors who want to give audaciously and build a legacy that outlives them.

This conversation is honest about the parts that are hard but help us move forward.

Whether you're thinking your own corporate exit, curious how philanthropy actually works, or you just need permission to take care of yourself first, this one will be a good one for you.

  • Stop Undercharging: The Simple Math That Tells You What You're Actually Worth [Ep. 30]

Still pricing your services off a feeling? or worse, off that client who says "help me out"? This episode is your tough-love pricing intervention. I walk you through the simple hourly math that shows what you're actually worth (hourly that is!), why your "giving" nature is quietly draining your business, and how to set prices like a CEO instead of a people-pleaser.

We will also touch on the following:

    • Why service-based businesses like ours should aim for 40–50% profit margins (minimum)
    • The subscription audit: review your statements every couple of months and cancel the "prettier" tools you're not actually using
    • Why setting this foundation now (even as a solopreneur)  is so much easier than trying to fix it once you've scaled

Your clients deserve your best. So do you. And you can't give your best from a place of resentment because their invoice doesn't even cover your costs. Price like the CEO you are.

  • Stop Depending on Referrals: How to Take Control of Your Sales Using LinkedIn [Ep. 29]

If every client you've ever landed came from a referral, I want you to notice something: that's not a sales strategy. It's hoping the right person mentions your name to the right person at the right time. It works...until it doesn't. I know, because that's exactly where I started.

This episode is a full masterclass I taught on how to stop waiting for referrals and start generating your own leads on LinkedIn:

    • Why LinkedIn is really just a free lead list — the agencies charging you for leads are pulling them from LinkedIn anyway
    • How to stand out — share your point of view, post case studies ("I helped a client go from X to Y"), and teach your frameworks instead of pitching
    • Comment intentionally — on LinkedIn your comments don't disappear; they get seen by everyone connected, which is where the real visibility lives
    • The DM formula — lead with what resonated in their post, wait for a reply, ask about their pain points, keep messages short, and never open with your calendar link
    • Do it yourself first, then delegate — document your process so you know what "good" looks like before you hire it out

  • Using AI to Run Your Business: How Andrea Palacios Automated a Failing Company Into Freedom [Ep. 28]

Five days after Andrea Palacios bought a landscaping company, the seller disappeared with $7,500. Two months later the manager quit and told the whole crew to find new jobs. Revenue dropped from $70K to $40K, the loan was tied to her house, and she had two babies 13 months apart. She'd sold a business she ran from a sailboat for freedom, and now she had none of it.

That's where this conversation starts, and it's the most honest one we've had on the show about how hard it gets before it turns.

Andrea is the founder of Crewless and an AI business strategist who helps service business owners automate their operations, with no tech background.

  • Why You Can't Move Forward When You're Trying to Control Everything [Ep. 27]

Take a minute and pause. Stop trying to do it all. Stop trying to do everything yourself.

I keep having this same conversation with clients, with founders, with Latina entrepreneurs who are running on empty. You're going through the emails, onboarding the new hire, putting out fires with clients, and the list never ends. And if you don't have a team yet, it starts even earlier, you're building the website, editing the photos, chasing the perfect template, telling yourself that's the brand. But you don't have a brand until you know who you're meant to serve.

In this episode I get into:

    • Why trying to control everything is the thing keeping you stuck
    • Finding your North Star so the shiny objects stop pulling you off course
    • Why feedback is a gift, and how hard it is for most of us to give or receive
    • Stepping into the leader you already are — instead of waiting until you "have a business"

This is the thinking behind my JEFA Focus Sprint: 90 days of cutting the noise and getting hyper-focused on the one thing that actually generates sales.  Book a Cafecito with me to see if this is the right fit for you.

  • Building a Business That Lasts: How Bob Jauregui Built a Self-Funded Award-Winning Wine [Ep. 26]

Before Bob Jauregui started his winery, he asked the pros how long it would take. Every one of them said eight to ten years — then asked if he was sure. He said he was all in.

Nine years later, Vinos Unidos just took the number-one wine in California for small producers, out of 162. Bob is one of the few Hispanic vintners in Napa and Sonoma, and he built the whole thing self-funded — no big loans, just pouring profits back in. In this episode we get into the long game nobody warns you about:

    • Self-funding a product business — and what he learned
    • The COVID pivot that wiped out his restaurant model and pushed him online overnight
    • "You can't make the wave — you have to ride it"
    • His two rules for starting out: be genuinely passionate, and don't reinvent the wheel — go learn from people who've done it
    • Why the lone-wolf entrepreneur doesn't make it
    • The scholarship he funded before making a single dollar

If you're building something you want still standing in ten years, this one's for you.

  • Building business relationships: How Patty Covarrubias Built a Thriving Firm With No Business Plan [Ep. 25]

"Calladita es más bonita." Maybe you heard it from your mom, your abuela, a tía at a family party. And maybe you didn't notice how long you carried it — into rooms where you had something to say and said nothing.

Patty Covarrubias set it down with one question. She was a senior at USC, she walked into a mentor's office, and she asked for help finding an internship. That single ask led to twenty years in corporate banking and eventually to her own firm, Covamos Consulting Group.

For Latina entrepreneurs especially, that first ask is so much heavier than it looks. We were raised to be agreeable, to wait until we're invited. So asking feels like breaking something. But Patty's whole business , every client, every partnership, every opportunity, came from relationships built by people who were willing to ask and willing to stay in touch. No cold calls. No business plan.

We get into imposter syndrome, the layoff that pushed her into consulting before she felt ready, the paperwork nobody warns you about, and what it feels like to finally come into your own in your forties.

If you've been waiting to feel ready before you ask someone for something — this one is for you.

  • Business Communities for Latina Entrepreneurs: Why the Wrong One is Costing You [Ep. 24]

You've probably joined a group that promised connection and delivered… silence. Posts with no replies. A chat full of people just pitching.

For Latina entrepreneurs especially, the right room matters more than most people realize. Many of us aren't building from a network of business owners. We don't have easy access to mentorship. We're building something while carrying family, culture, and responsibility all at once. When you finally land in the right community, you stop guessing — you ask a question and get an answer from someone who's already done it. That alone can save you months, sometimes years.

I also share a short message for anyone thinking of building their own: people don't need another group — they need a space that was actually designed for them.
