This week, I'm doing something a little different. No guest, no interview just me sharing my story.
After 20 years in law enforcement, I've learned that some of the toughest battles don't happen on the streets. Sometimes, they happen inside our own agencies, within our own minds, and long after we hang up the uniform.
In Segment 1 of 3, I take you back to where my journey began: a childhood dream of becoming a police officer, the brotherhood that drew me to the profession, and the experiences that shaped the officer — and person — I became.
I also open up about losing a friend and fellow officer to suicide, the guilt I carried, and what it was like to be expected to show up for duty when I was struggling to process a devastating loss.
This conversation goes beyond calls, badges, and uniforms. It's about leadership, compassion, workplace culture, trauma, and the things we don't always talk about in law enforcement.
For years, the message was simple: Suck it up, keep your head down, and do your job.
But what happens when that mindset starts breaking the very people who live by it?
I'm sharing my story because I hope someone out there hears something they need to hear. Maybe you're a first responder struggling silently. Maybe you're a supervisor trying to understand your team. Or maybe you're a family member wondering why someone you love has changed.
Wherever you fit into this conversation, I hope you'll listen, share your thoughts, and help us change the conversation around first responder mental health.
Because taking care of the people who take care of everyone else shouldn't be optional.
🎧 Listen to Segment 1 of 3 of the Law Enforcement Workshop Podcast.
Let's start talking about the things we were taught to keep quiet.

In Segment 3 of the Law Enforcement Workshop conversation with Kevin Hansen, we go straight into one of the hardest topics in leadership: what toxic leadership does to an organization — and what happens when nobody addresses it.
We talk about:
➡️ Toxic leadership and its ripple effect
➡️ Why the person producing the best numbers isn't always the best leader
➡️ Rewarding the behaviors you want to see repeated
➡️ The difference between a BOSS and a LEADER
➡️ Courage, honesty and making difficult decisions
➡️ Why leaders have to build people, not just employees
➡️ The importance of mentors and outside perspectives
➡️ Supporting the first responders in your life
➡️ Finding purpose beyond the paycheck
➡️ And why leaders never stop learning or listening
One of the biggest takeaways? If you're talking, you're not listening.
Leadership isn't about having all the answers. It's about being willing to listen, learn, adapt and help the people around you become better.
This is a conversation every leader — and every person thinking about becoming a leader — should hear.

Leadership. Character. Culture. Real conversations from real experiences.
Don't just listen to this one. Ask yourself: What kind of leader are YOU?

Is it a rank?A title?A degree on the wall?Or is it something much deeper? In Segment 2 of 3, I continue my conversation with Kevin Hansen from Focal Point Coaching, and we dive into some topics that every leader in law enforcement and the first responder community should be thinking about. We talk about promotions, credentials, mentorship, recognizing your people, developing future leaders, and what it really means to serve the people you lead. One of the biggest takeaways?Leadership isn't always found in the person with the highest rank.Sometimes the person everyone turns to when they need help, guidance, or someone they can trust is already demonstrating the qualities of a great leader—they just don't have the title yet.Leadership starts with self-reflection. It starts with being willing to look in the mirror, listen to feedback, understand your people, and make small changes that can create a much bigger impact. You don't have to change everything overnight.Sometimes one small change creates a ripple effect like a small pebble in the pond.www.lawenforcementworkshop.com#LeadershipDevelopment #FirstResponderLife #PoliceCulture #ServantLeadership #LeadByExample
In Segment One of the Law Enforcement Workshop, I sit down with Kevin Hansen from Focal Point Coaching for a conversation that goes far beyond titles, ranks, and stripes.
We talk about leadership, character, accountability, communication, and the responsibility leaders have to truly know the people they lead.
Kevin brings a powerful perspective: leadership isn’t a destination. The best leaders are constantly learning, adapting, listening, and looking for ways to help their people succeed.
I also share real-life experiences from my law enforcement career—including a leadership decision that had an impact on me far beyond that single moment.
Sometimes the difference between a good leader and a bad leader isn't what happens when everything is going right.
It's how you treat your people when things aren't.
This is a conversation every law enforcement leader, first responder, supervisor, and aspiring leader should hear.

In Part 2 of the Law Enforcement Workshop Podcast, Israel continues the conversation with Ryan Williams from the Fond du Lac Police Department as they dive even deeper into surviving trauma, rebuilding confidence, supporting officers, leadership, and what it really takes to build a strong law enforcement culture.
Ryan opens up about returning to work after being shot in the line of duty, learning to work through fear, the friendships that came from tragedy, and the importance of organizations like C.O.P.S. and the Police Unity Tour.
The conversation then shifts to the next generation of officers — from communication and financial wellness to mentorship, accountability, relationships, and the importance of not giving up on people.
One of the biggest takeaways? “Would you want to work with you?” And when it comes to leadership, Ryan shares another powerful lesson:You don't know everything — and that's okay.
Being willing to learn, challenge your own ego, have courageous conversations, and help others grow can make all the difference in a career.
And to close out the conversation, one message stands out:It's a dangerous job, but that doesn't mean you have to do it dangerously.

What happens when law enforcement officers are given the freedom to be creative, build relationships, and actually enjoy the job?
In this episode of the Law Enforcement Workshop Podcast, Israel sits down with Ryan Williams of the Fond du Lac Police Department to talk about nearly 24 years in law enforcement, leadership, recruitment, department culture, creativity, and the importance of building a strong law enforcement family.
From walk-up songs for new hires and monthly “Battleshifts” to creative recruiting videos and finding ways to keep officers engaged, Ryan shares how doing things differently can make a department stand out.
The conversation also gets much deeper as Ryan shares his experience being shot in the line of duty, losing a fellow officer, the impact of trauma, Police Week, the Police Unity Tour, and why agencies need to be better prepared to support officers and their families after critical incidents.
This is a conversation about culture, leadership, brotherhood, trauma, creativity, and taking care of your own.
