It's easy to get negative first impressions of the Torah. We've been conditioned in the Christian world to equate the law with legalism. And then if you're coming from a non-religious background there's stuff in there that can come across as downright barbaric, not much different than Sharia law today. I've found it helpful to take a step back and look at what the Hebrew word "torah" literally means - because it doesn't mean law, that's a mistranslation.
