Stephen Jones says it's not the players, McCarthy says it's not the defensive scheme, so which is it?

DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Two of the men at the top of the Cowboys organization offered different assessments of the Ravens rushing assault on the Dallas defense on Tuesday night.

Head coach Mike McCarthy was first up last night, saying he doesn't believe the defensive scheme is the issue for the Cowboys allowing the Ravens to gash them for 294 yards on the ground.

“We’re pretty far down the road to blame this on the scheme. Our execution clearly wasn’t where it needed to be," McCarthy said.

Fast forward to Wednesday morning on 105.3 The Fan, and Cowboys COO Stephen Jones had a different take.

“I think we’ve got good football players, it’s just right now, we’re just not executing. There’s a similar group of guys out on that field who last year weren’t that inefficient against the run. I’m convinced we can get the job done.”

Both men blamed "execution" on the Cowboy's leaky defense. However, both used differing reasons for the failure in execution.

Is defensive coordinator Mike Nolan's scheme really at fault? Are the players, who performed better against the run last season, simply regressing?

One thing is clear, sooner or later there has to be a discussion between the two, Jerry, Will McClay, etc. to get to the bottom of it.
