In Romans 6:1-14, Bro John Deaton of Calvary Baptist Church of Evening Shade, AR, explains how Jesus Christ frees the believer from sin's dominion. The seed promise was also given to Abraham who believed the promise of God as shown in Genesis 12 and Genesis 22. We cite the book of Hebrews about this. Those under the law were slaves to sin but God redeemed those who thus become in Christ and sons through adoption. In class we have a robust discussion about the significance of adoption in important New Testament passages such as these. Those who are adopted are heirs of God and are part of the family of God. The only way to be truly part of God's family is through adoption. To this end we also study Ephesians 1:4-5. Here we find that God chose us "in Him" before the foundation of the world. All those in Adam are lost sinners and without hope in God. Those who are converted are the very ones Paul says were adopted through Jesus Christ for Himself. This is all according to God's good pleasure and His purposes. The practical part of this is that we are motivated to change and grow in God's grace because of this glorious status in Christ and His magnificent promises. This does not cause complacency but real change in how we live by God's promises.
