In the featured college lacrosse game of the weekend, the Maryland Terps lacrosse squad put the Big Ten on notice by using a fourth quarter run to separate from fellow undefeated team Rutgers. Jared Bernhardt proved he's worth of legit Tewaaraton talk by going off for 6 goals and an assist. Daniel Maltz (4g) and Logan Wisnauskas (2g, 2a) also factored heavily for Maryland. Kieran Mullins paced Rutgers with 3 goals and 2 helpers and Adam Charalambides chipped in 4 goals in the Rutgers loss.
Johns Hopkins got a much needed win over Penn State on Saturday and did so in a big way. 13-6 was the final at Homewood as we saw Joey Epstein put up a solid 2 goals and 2 assists, Connor DeSimone proved his move to attack was smart going for 4 goals and an assist in the Hopkins win. Matt Narewski won 12 of 21 draws for Hop helping them gain an edge in the possession battle.
LIU proved they belong in the NEC by knocking off offensive powerhouse Hobart by 2 goals. Richie LaCalandra fronted a powerful offensive attack for LIU with 4 goals and 2 assists, a few of the highlight reel variety. LIU keeper Will Mark was the story of this game however putting up 24 saves vs 36 shots faced. He prevented Hobart from getting any real momentum and that ended up being the difference in this game.

We have a host of fairly high profile college lacrosse games to talk about in todays episode. Duke and High Point start it all off tonight (Wednesday) followed up by North Carolina travelling north to take on ACC foe Virginia. Friday gives us a 3rd night in a row watching ACC teams play with Syracuse hosting Stony Brook at the Carrier Dome.
Saturday we have perhaps the biggest game of the weekend other than UNC/UVA. Maryland hosts Rutgers in College Park in a battle of the top two Big Ten lacrosse squads. Both teams come into the game with 3-0 records and you can expect a hotly contested, sometimes angry matchup.
Another battle being waged to decide who's top dog in their conference is Georgetown and Denver. The Pio's are playing touch after early losses to Duke and Carolina, but the Hoyas defense is tops in the nation and they have offense to compliment it. Should be a great game.

College lacrosse is now in full swing and there is nothing better than March lacrosse (other than Memorial Day lacrosse). In the biggest rivalry matchup of the weekend, Johns Hopkins hung early with Maryland, but Jared Bernhardt and the Terps proved too much in the end beating Hopkins 18-10.
Syracuse hosted Vermont in the Dome and things got chippy, Vermont hung around, but Syracuse picked up the 17-13 win in the end thanks to big games out the Syracuse attack. Stephen Rehfuss (2g, 6a), Owen Hiltz (4g, 1a) and Chase Scanlan (3g, 1a) all factored heavily in helping Syracuse stave off Tommy Burke's outstanding day at the faceoff dot for Vermont. Burke won 24 of 34 draws on the day.
Penn State and Rutgers both picked up B1G wins (pun intended) and other teams pulling off victorsy included Georgetown (20-13 over Marquette), Albany (16-6 over Hartford), Army (12-10 over Boston U.), Hobart (13-9 over The Mount), North Carolina, Virginia, Lehigh and more.

Georgetown's defense gave up a whopping 5 goals, but despite Mount St Mary's proving they could score more than once where others had failed, the Hoya's still pick up a very lopsided 17-5 win. Jake Carraway was big once again for Gtown going for 5 goals and 2 assists in the win. Alex Mazzone forced 3 turnovers and picked up 7 groundballs to help lead the Hoyas defense.
Hofstra beat down Wagner 18-6 and Ryan Tierney continued his outpouring of offense by putting up 6 goals in the win off just 11 shots. Alex Concannon chipped in 3 goals and 2 helpers for the Pride.
In yet another lopsided Tuesday win, Robert Morris took it to Bellarmine by a score of 17-8. Ryan Smith went off for 5 goals and 6 assists for Bobby Mo off just 8 shots.
In action on Wednesday we'll see Virginia and High Point face off in the early evening. Both teams are coming off blow out losses, UVA's to Syracuse and High Points at the hands of North Carolina.

What a day of college lacrosse action, highlighted by Syracuse beating down Virginia in the dome by a score of 20-10. The Syracuse attack unit showed up, Rehfuss was good for 3 goals and 3 assists, Owen Hiltz in his first start goes for 3 goals and 2 helpers. The Cuse midfield also showed in a big way, Brendan Curry, 3 goals and 4 assists, Tucker Dorcevic, 3 goals, Jamie Trimboli, 2 goals, Owen Seebold and Lucas Quinn each went for 2 goals. It was an offensive outpouring for the Orange. UVA's Matt Moore and Dox Aitken were both held scoreless and the rest of Virginia's supporting cast were all quieted by an incredible defensive effort out of Drake Porter and company.
Duke is starting to look like what we expected them to on offense as they beat up Air Force at home, 17-7. Michael Sowers showed well in the box score with 8 points off 3 goals and 5 assists. Joe Robertson continued his welcome back party putting up 7 goals and 3 assists in the Blue Devil's win.
Rutgers surprised some folks by thrashing Ohio State in The Shoe 22-12. Connor Kirst continued his dominance of Big Ten foes by putting up 4 goals while teammate Adam Charalmbides was good for 5 goals and a dish and Mullins 2 goals and 4 helpers.
In other action, Hopkins defeated Michigan on the road 14-7. Joey Epstein went for 6 goals off just 8 shots which was good to see. North Carolina waxed High Point in their second meeting of the season 27-12. Gray and Solomon both went for 4 goals and 3 assists in the beat down.
Notre Dame saw their first action in a 19-7 win over Robert Morris, proving that the ACC is not to be messed with. Pat Kavanaugh had a monster day contributing 2 goals and 7 helpers in the win.
Georgetown continued their defensive dominance holding yet another team to a single goal. This time St. John's was the team that had to endure the embarrassment. So far over their first two games the Hoyas have outscored their foes 35-2. Jake Carraway was solid for Gtown putting up 3 goals and 3 helpers.

Did Richmond provide a recipe to the ACC for how to hold Chris Gray in check and disrupt North Carolina's powerful offense? It would seem that Richmond came out and pressured UNC all over the field more than any other team they've faced has done so far, a very gutsy move by the Richmond staff, and it paid off. Richmond held Chris Gray to just 1 goal and 1 assist despite the loss.
Syracuse's epic meltdown against Army proved that the Orange still have off-ball defensive issues. They have played poorly off-ball in recent years and that continuation has Cuse fans alarmed. Luckily these are things that can be shored up as the season progresses, but with Cuse getting a late start, they will be facing teams like UVA that already have 4 or 5 games under their belts so that will continue to be a challenge as Cuse tries to get their game legs back.
Johns Hopkins struggled on-ball, allowing Ohio State dodgers to wreak havoc on their new goaltender who played admirably. Georgetown put the entire nation on notice by only giving up a single goal in a huge 16-1 win over Big East rival Villanova. No one saw that coming. Sure, I knew the Hoya's defense was solid, but I didn't see them holding anyone to a single goal.
All that and more in this weeks episode, our 138th podcast. Getting mighty close to 150.

Sad day if you are a Syracuse lacrosse fan as the Orange got dropped at home by Army badly, 18-11. Tucker Dordevic paced Syracuse with 4 goals and 1 assist in the loss while Brendan Nichtern helped lead Army to victory with a 4 goal, 3 assist effort.
Virginia held on to beat Loyola by a score of 15-12. Connor Shellenberger continued to impress with a 2 goal, 3 assist outing and Matt Moore in his 2nd game back went for 5 goals in the UVA win.
The Kirst brothers paced Rutgers to a huge 11-9 home win over Penn State. Connor Kirst, former Villanova midfielder was good for 3 goals and 4 assists on the day while his brother, transfer goal keeper Colin made 15 saves against a PSU offense that struggled.
Other winners, Maryland over Michigan and Ohio State over Hopkins. Stony Brook gets a win as does Hofstra, Denver and more.

We had a great game on tobacco road Tuesday with North Carolina holding on late to deal High Point a loss by a score of 17-15. Chris Gray held court putting up another 7-point game (3 goals, 4 assists) and Asher Nolting took point for High Point and had a monster 4 goal, 5 assist outing in the loss. Antonio Arcona stood on his head in cage for High Point putting up 18 saves on the day.
On Sunday, Virginia hosted Army and while UVA handled their business in the 14-9 win, Army looked decent in their first outing of the season. Payton Cormier paced the Cavs with 3 goals and 2 assists and Brendan Nichtern did his thing for Army with 2 goals and 3 dishes in the loss. Wyatt Schupler kept Army in the game with 12 saves.
Richmond held a lead most of the game, but Loyola rebounded late seeing Kevin Lindley tie the game at 7's forcing overtime and then scoring the game winner in OT. Lindley finished the game with 3 goals, Aidan Olmstead went for a goal and 2 dishes in the big win over the Spiders. Luke Grayum paced Richmond with 2 goals in this absolute snoozer until the end.

North Carolina and Chris Gray continue their quest for glory waxing Jacksonville and Gray put up 4 goals and 3 assists in the UNC win.
High Point and their big cat Asher Nolting had themselves a day beating up on Robert Morris 21-15. Nolting got help from teammates all over the place while he himself went for 3 goals and 4 assists in the victory.
Denver got back into the win column by dropping Air Force and Ethan Walker went off for 5 goals and 2 assists while Jackson Morrill put up 2 goals and 4 assists in the Pio's win.
Towson got themselves their first W in almost two years by defeating St. Joseph's in overtime off a Andrew Milani goal in overtime. Bryant didn't need overtime to beat Providence by a goal in large part thanks to goaltender Luke Caracciolo's 16 saves.

In the official first week of college lacrosse action, we have Army taking on Virginia after UMass was forced to cancel, we have Richmond hosting Loyola in a top 20 matchup, Air Force on the road at Denver in what already feels like a must win game for Denver and much more.
Connor Shellenberger, Payton Cormier and Charlie Bertrans proved that UVA can win big even without Matt Moore and Dox Aitken. Army is solid, but lost quite a bit of talent from last years roster, so UVA is still a heavy favorite, although never count a service academy out.
Loyola and Richmond should be a dogfight. Olmstead vs Lanchbury. Lindley vs Connell. Lots of great matchups. We have 50/50 scorers and we have pure goal scorers that have barely passed a ball to a teammate. Going to be a great game.
Denver struggled vs Utah, blew a big lead against Duke and then got smacked by North Carolina. This game against Air Force feels like a must win scenario even though in reality it isn't.
