Riche et célèbre éditeur, Pierre Brochant et ses amis organisent tous les mercredis un dîner où chacun invite un ‘con’. Le jeu est simple: l’ami qui amène le con le plus spectaculaire gagne. Ce soir-là, Brochant trouve un invité idéal pour le jeu, ‘un champion du monde’. Il s’appelle François Pignon et il est employé au ministère des finances. Mais alors que le jeu devient intéressant, Brochant est soudain malade et il apprend par un message vocal que sa femme l’a quitté. Donc il demande à Pignon d’appeler des hommes qu’il soupçonne.
L’histoire tourne en une drôle de catastrophe parce que Pignon fait gaffe après gaffe. Le tout est une série de situations embarrassantes et de fous rires.
La comédie est en fait l’adaptation d’une pièce de théâtre et ne dure que 77 minutes, mais c’est un grand succès où les acteurs Jacques Villeret et Daniel Prévost gagnent des Césars en 1999 (le césar est l’équivalent français des oscars). A mon avis, les meilleures comédies françaises sont celles qui ont été adaptées du théâtre. Ce qui est encore mieux que le film, c’est regarder la pièce de théâtre. C’est des fous rires garantis.

Rich and famous editor, Pierre Brochant and his friends organise a diner every wednesday where each one of them invites an idiot. The game is simple: the friend that brings the most spectacular idiot wins. That night, Brochant finds an ideal guest for the game, a world champion. His name is Francois Pignon and he is an employee at the ministry of finance. But as the game is starting to get interesting, Brochant is suddenly sick and he learns by voicemail that his wife left him. So he asks Pignon to call the men that he suspects.
The story turns into a funny catastrophe because Pignon makes mistake after mistake. The whole thing is a series of embarrassing situations and of hard laughs.
The comedy is in fact the adaptation of a theatre piece and only last 77 minutes, but it is a great success where the actors Jacques Villeret and Daniel Prevost win Cesars in 1999 (the cesar is the French equivalent of the oscars). In my opinion, the best French comedies are those that have been adapted from theatre. What is even better than the movie is to watch the theatre piece. It’s guaranteed hard laughs.
