I had the opportunity to engage in a profound and revealing conversation with survivors of the Ohio State University sex abuse scandal. This podcast post aims to shed light on the harrowing experiences of these survivors, what Jim Jordan knew and didn't do, the systemic failures of the universities involved, and the urgent need for awareness, accountability, and change.

The Survivors Speak Out
The survivors shared their personal stories of abuse, recounting instances of excessive fondling, drugging, rape, and voyeurism. They painted a disturbing picture of the environment at Ohio State, where faculty and staff were allowed to engage in inappropriate behavior. Their frustration with the legal system and the lack of support from the universities was palpable.

Dr. Richard Strauss, a central figure in the scandal, was described as a manipulator who groomed his victims under the guise of medical procedures. The survivors emphasized the normalization of the abuse and the complicity of the institution in protecting Strauss. The survivors discussed the normalization and acceptance of the abuse within the athletic programs. They mentioned how the coaches and assistant coaches were aware of what was happening and even participated in normalizing it. The abuse was compared to hazing and initiation, and the upperclassmen would laugh about it. The power dynamic and fear of speaking out were highlighted, as well as the shame and confusion experienced by the survivors.

The NCAA's Role and the Culture at Ohio State
The survivors questioned why the NCAA hasn't investigated Ohio State University and suggested that it is because it would harm their brand. They highlighted the culture and atmosphere at Ohio State, specifically mentioning the sauna and showers where Dr. Richard Strauss would spend hours and engage in inappropriate behavior with the athletes.

Systemic Issues and Legal Proceedings
The survivors discussed the systemic issues at Ohio State University and the failure of coaches and administrators to address the abuse by Dr. Richard Strauss. Rocky Ratliff, a survivor and attorney representing other survivors in the lawsuit against Ohio State University, discussed the legal proceedings and tactics used to discredit the survivors.

Personal Experiences and the Need for Legislative Changes
The survivors discussed their personal experiences with the Ohio State University sex abuse scandal. They expressed their disappointment in the university's handling of the situation and the use of taxpayer dollars to pay settlements and legal fees. Veteran Transition: Insights from a Veteran Leader

On my "Leadership" podcast, I had an enlightening talk with Connie, a veteran and chair of the Ohio Democratic Party's Veterans and Military Community Caucus. We discussed the hurdles veterans face when returning to civilian life and the essential support they need.

Benefits and Healthcare Challenges
Connie shed light on the struggles veterans face accessing benefits and healthcare, especially those affected by toxic chemical exposure. We emphasized the need for both physical and mental health support, as well as programs to combat veteran homelessness and ease reentry into society.

Veterans Treatment Courts
We talked about veterans treatment courts, which provide a dedicated legal track for veterans with offenses often linked to their service. These courts understand veterans' unique situations, like traumatic brain injuries and PTSD, and work with VA hospitals to offer treatment over punishment.

Reentry Barriers
Connie recounted her own experience applying for a government lawyer role, where her veteran status and five years of experience weren't enough to secure an interview, illustrating the employment obstacles veterans encounter. We stressed the need for better reentry support, including healthcare, mental health services, and job opportunities.

Military Families' Struggles
The conversation also covered the emotional and mental strain on military spouses during deployment, highlighting the need for stronger support and resources for these families.

Enhancing Healthcare and Support
Connie advocated for broader healthcare access, Medicaid expansion, and more veterans' homes for end-of-life care. She called for better mental health support and job opportunities for veterans transitioning to civilian life.

Voting Rights and Food Insecurity
We touched on the need to improve voting rights for active-duty members and address food insecurity among service members and their families.

My talk with Connie was a stark reminder of the multifaceted advocacy needed for veterans. From healthcare and mental health to employment and legal aid,  a comprehensive approach is vital. We must honor our veterans by ensuring they have the support for a successful civilian transition. I urge listeners and readers to think about how to aid veterans' well-being,  whether through advocacy, volunteering, or raising awareness. Every effort helps strengthen the support network for our nation's service members.

In this episode of "Leadership with Tammy Wilson", Tammy interviews Rick Goff, a member of the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, about the tragic kidnapping and assault of his daughter, Denise Amber Lee, in 2008. Despite Denise's brave efforts, she was not saved in time due to dispatcher errors. The incident led to a law requiring formal training for dispatchers. Rick also discusses the trial and conviction of the perpetrators, the discovery of Denise's body, and the impact on his family. The episode also touches on a scholarship established in Denise's honor and Rick's advocacy for improved dispatcher training.

Denise was a vibrant young woman who was tragically kidnapped from her home, raped, beaten, and shot by a man she had never met. Despite the horrifying ordeal, Denise displayed incredible bravery and resourcefulness. She hid her engagement ring in the kidnapper's car, leaving behind DNA evidence, and managed to keep him on the phone with the 911 system for seven minutes.
Unfortunately, due to a lack of formal training, the dispatchers made mistakes, and help was not dispatched in time to save Denise. This heartbreaking incident had a profound impact on her family, who think about Denise every day.

Rick Goff, Denise's father, and a member of the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, shared his experience and the deep connection he had with his daughter. He also discussed the mistakes and miscommunication that occurred during Denise's kidnapping.

Despite the tragedy, Denise's story led to significant changes in the law. A state legislator named Page Kriegel took Denise's case to Tallahassee, resulting in the passing of a law in her name. This law now requires dispatchers to undergo formal training and certification.

Rick's son-in-law, Nathan, travels the country sharing Denise's story, and Rick himself has been involved in teaching homicide classes. He emphasizes the importance of looking beyond immediate family members when investigating crimes and considering the possibility of a stranger being involved.

Rick also shared his plans to promote Denise's story and raise funds for her scholarship. He will be attending a conference in Pittsburgh as a guest of Dr. Cyril, a renowned forensic pathologist. Rick also plans to visit Washington DC to speak to legislators about Denise's story and advocate for certification and training for 911 dispatchers to prevent similar tragedies.

Despite the heartbreaking nature of the story, it is crucial to share such stories as they shed light on the failures within our system. By discussing these issues, we can work towards making necessary changes to prevent further tragedies and save lives especially when there are officials and politicians such as Jim Jordan who vote NO on simple measures such as the Violence Against Women Act!

6. The Power of Personal Stories: Maggie highlighted the importance of sharing personal stories to humanize the issue of abortion. She also discussed the potential consequences of overturning the constitutional amendment and the rising criminalization of miscarriages.
