  • 3 Leadership Communication Lessons from Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss

Most leaders prepare what they want to say. In this episode of Lead with Presence, Carlo Loiudice looks at what happens when you learn to listen more strategically instead.

In Berlin? Train these communication skills live at the Public Speaking Intensive on October 17.

    Reserve your seat.

Drawing on Chris Voss’s Never Split the Difference, you will explore three practical communication tools: mirroring, labeling, and calibrated questions. You will learn how to slow down a challenging Q&A, name an unspoken concern without becoming defensive, and use “what” and “how” questions to keep a conversation moving.

These techniques are not about manipulating people.

They are practical forms of tactical empathy that help others feel heard, reveal what sits behind a question, and allow you to respond with greater clarity. This kind of active engagement is also central to Carlo’s Authentic Speaker Practice.

  • How to sound confident without sounding fake when presenting

Public speaking advice often tells you to stand tall, slow down, make eye contact and use deliberate gestures. These techniques can help. But if all your attention goes into performing confidence, you stop being present.

Want to practise these skills in person? Join the Public Speaking Intensive in Berlin on 17 October.

People may not be able to explain what feels wrong, but they notice the distance between you and your message.

Authentic communication does not mean speaking without preparation or saying whatever comes to mind. It means using technique in service of a real intention, instead of using it to imitate someone else’s idea of a confident speaker.

Before your next presentation, replace “How should I sound?” with a more useful question: “What do I want people to understand, feel or do?”

That intention gives your voice, posture and words a reason to be there. You cannot perform your way into presence, but you can train your way into it.

  • How to present to the board without losing the room

Most executives prepare a board presentation by polishing the slides and rehearsing the numbers. But a board presentation is not a lecture. It is a negotiation around a decision.

Want to practise these skills in person? Join the Public Speaking Intensive in Berlin on 17 October.

Before you build the deck, ask yourself: Who is in the room? What does each person care about? What decision do I need from them?

Then lead with your recommendation, not ten minutes of background. Give the board the conclusion first and use the evidence to support it.

And prepare for the Q&A as carefully as the presentation itself. That is often where trust is built: not by having a perfect answer ready, but by receiving the question, pausing, and responding with clarity instead of defensiveness.

  • 3 Pauses That Build Leadership Presence

Most people are afraid of silence. They rush to fill it, talk faster, and think that if they stop, they will lose the room. The power of pause in public speaking works the opposite way: intentional silence builds authority, not weakness.

In this episode of Lead with Presence, Carlo Loiudice breaks down why speakers who talk too fast under pressure are not bad communicators, they are just leaving no space for the audience to absorb what they said. Using Barack Obama as an example of a speaker who was as compelling in his silences as in his words, Carlo explains how to turn pausing from something that feels uncomfortable into a deliberate tool for leadership presence.

    In this episode:

    • Why speed in conversation is not the same as speed in communication, and why smart, fast thinkers often talk over their own ideas• Three types of pause that build leadership presence: the emphasis pause, the transition pause, and the connection pause• A practical scenario for each one, from landing a strategy with your team to giving difficult feedback to a direct report• Why a pause always feels longer to you than it does to your audience, and what that means for how you rehearse

These techniques are part of Carlo's Authentic Speaker Practice, including what he calls the uncomfortable pause, an exercise he uses in one-to-one coaching and workshops with professionals, leaders, and teams.

  • 3 Ways to Beat Public Speaking Anxiety

Your heart is pounding. Your hands are shaking. Your mind just went blank. Public speaking anxiety is not weakness. It is biology. Here are three practical ways to manage nerves and speak with composure under pressure.

A senior manager in Berlin described exactly this reaction to Carlo Loiudice before one of the biggest presentations of his career. In this episode of Lead with Presence, Carlo explains what happens to your body when presentation anxiety triggers the fight-or-flight response, and what you can do before you step into a boardroom, meeting, presentation, or onto a stage.

Athletes feel it before a race. Actors feel it before they perform. The difference is not the feeling. It is what you do with it.

    In this episode:

    • Why your nervous system can react to a boardroom as if you were facing a physical threat
    • Three practical techniques for managing public speaking anxiety before a high-stakes presentation: extending the exhale, grounding through your feet, and arriving early to own the room
    • Why the goal is not to eliminate nervousness, but to train composure under pressure
    • How to approach the speaking situation you keep postponing because of the way your body reacts to it

These techniques are part of Carlo's Authentic Speaker Practice, the method he uses in one-to-one communication coaching and workshops with professionals, leaders, and teams.

  • Confidence is not a Gift

Confidence is not something you are born with; it is a skill you build under real pressure. Train it live on October 17 in Berlin at the Public Speaking Intensive.

    Reserve your seat: https://www.carloloiudice.com/en/public-speaking-intensive-workshop-berlin/

In this episode, Carlo Loiudice breaks down one of the most common myths about public speaking confidence: that some people are simply born with it. Drawing on years of coaching CEOs, managers, and HR leaders, plus decades on stage as an actor, Carlo explains why confidence is a trained skill, not a fixed trait, and what actually separates people who freeze in front of an audience from those who stay grounded under pressure.

Carlo shares a real conversation from a dinner in Berlin, where a senior engineer freshly promoted to team lead admitted that the moment he has to present to the whole company, he freezes and stops sounding like himself. That, Carlo argues, is not a confidence problem; it is a practice problem, and the distinction changes everything about how you prepare for high-visibility moments.

    In this episode:

    • Why what we call confidence from the outside is almost always preparation and repetition from the inside• What actually happens in your voice, energy and presence when you step into a bigger role or a higher-stakes audience• The Dunning-Kruger effect and why the loudest person in the room is often the one who knows the least• How actors train nerves into a usable skill instead of trying to eliminate them• A practical shift: stop waiting to feel confident, and start treating confidence as something you build by doing the thing

Carlo Loiudice is an ICF-certified coach and an actor with over thirty years on stage, based in Berlin. His Authentic Speaker Practice method combines coaching and stagecraft to help leaders communicate with more intention, authority, and genuine presence, not by performing confidence, but by building it for real.
