Ashwin Cheriyan took the leap into entrepreneurship with his wife, Shiri Avnery, when he started the plant-based meal delivery service, Thistle, in 2013. He was a former corporate lawyer, and she was a climate scientist frustrated by how little people were talking about the environmental impact of reducing demand for animal products, let alone the impact on human health. They knew that getting people to shift their eating habits meant making plant-based meals more delicious and convenient.
In this episode of Lead With We, Ashwin and I talk about how his personal connection to healthy food has sustained him through the inevitable ups and downs of entrepreneurship, motivating consumers to make better choices, and so much more.
Ashwin Cheriyan
Ashwin Cheriyan is an entrepreneur, recovering corporate lawyer and a mediocre surfer. He is currently the co-founder and CEO of Thistle, a San Francisco-based modern, tech-enabled, organic food and nutrition company. He was also the co-founder of WeGoFair, a social enterprise providing ratings for hotels and restaurants reflecting their performance on social and environmental issues.
Prior to Thistle and WeGoFair, he spent 4 years in New York as an M&A associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett. He received his A.B. in Economics from Brown University and his JD from The University of Texas School of Law.
Outside of Thistle, he spends his energy working with, advising and investing in startups, suiting up in neoprene to surf the "world-class" waves of Pacifica, and enjoying the abundant culinary delights the Bay Area has to offer.

Thanks for joining us for another season of Lead With We. I couldn’t think of a better guest to kick things off than my dear friend, futurist Sally Uren.
Sally runs a leading sustainability non-profit called Forum For The Future that works directly with big brands and business leaders to create global change. Together we discuss the future of humanity (literally), and how we’re seeing very different trajectories play out simultaneously in real-time. And what I particularly love about this conversation is that Sally points to growing movements, such as regenerative agriculture and impact investing, as proof that we can build a positive future through our actions.
Sally Uren
Sally joined Forum for the Future, then a not-for-profit based solely in the UK, in 2002. Previously Deputy CEO, Sally was appointed Chief Executive in 2013. Since then, she has spearheaded Forum’s mission to create a more sustainable future by catalyzing transformational change in key global systems. Over this period, Sally has overseen Forum’s substantial growth into new markets while honing its focus on ensuring Forum makes a positive contribution to three global challenges: the climate crisis and ensuring the sustainability of our global food system and value chains.
Sally oversees the delivery of Forum’s programmatic work through a team of more than 80 sustainability professionals across offices in London, Singapore, New York and Mumbai. As part of this, she works with leading global players, including businesses such as Unilever and Olam, foundations such as the Laudes Foundation, and membership organizations such as Sedex, both in one-to-one partnerships, and also as part of multi-stakeholder collaborations designed to address complex challenges in systems as diverse as food, energy, apparel and shipping.
In December 2017, Sally received an OBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for services to sustainability in business. In 2019, she was ranked number one on Assent’s list of Top 100 Corporate Social Responsibility Influence Leaders.

We were just a few months into the pandemic and people around the world were protesting for racial justice.
Jeni’s known for being super creative and also making sure that each and every one of her 800+ employees is connected to the impact piece of the business. We talked about creating community within the company and how the Black Lives Matter Movement has pushed businesses to engage in social justice.

It’s a new year, but we continue grappling with the same big issues in 2021. For many, the events of last year made it impossible for business leaders to stand on the sidelines. But engaging with social justice issues is uncharted territory for most in the private sector. Let’s face it, 2021 is off to a bit of a rocky start. And it can be easy to get bogged down in all the uncertainty and negativity, which is why I’m revisiting a conversation I had last year with Matthew Pohlson, the Co-Founder and CEO of Omaze.
