Richard brings a unique approach to mental health with his connections to education, research, business and the media.  He joins the dots very elegantly between the academic and the "real" world and this made for a very interesting conversation!  We talked about a range of topics from his voluntary work in the Philippines via his work in education and inclusion to his TV work as the Psychotherapist expert on a reality TV show in Ireland.  He is a champion of those who don't have their voice heard, who don't feel connected and how we can all make positive changes and "rewrite our paradigms".   Tune in to be inspired to make change!

About Richard:

Richard Hogan is a systemically trained Family Psychotherapist registered with The Family Therapy Association of Ireland.  He writes every Thursday for the Irish Examiner.  His column explores many of the issues facing society today.

He is the author of the best selling book “Parenting the Screenager”. This book is a practical guide for parents of the modern child. The book has received critical acclaim from The Irish Times as a ‘must buy for any parent of a teenager’.

He is the clinical director of the award winning counselling service Therapy Institute. He has been invited by Trinity College Dublin to undertake a PhD exploring how to introduce systemic theory into the Irish educational system.

Richard was awarded a Fulbright scholarship this year and will be travelling to America in 2021 to carry out research on how to better promote inclusion in Irish and American Schools.

He is a regular contributor on shows such as The Hard Shoulder with Ivan Yates Newstalk, The Today Show RTÉ and Ireland AM Virgin Media as an expert in the field of human behaviour where he offers his expertise and strategies on how to over-come mental health issues.

Catching up with Hans van Rijn after 20 years was a real pleasure!  

Hans is a highly experienced project manager and team leader and has worked in international development for many years.

His professional expertise aside, what stood out for me in our conversation is his desire to help others develop and progress, either those in his team or young professionals coming up through the profession and a commitment to ensuring every member is able to perform to the best of their abilities.  

He is self-effacing and very modest with regards to his own leadership skills and abilities, but reading between the lines, we can see he's not only a very efficient and professional leader, but also greatly appreciated by his colleagues across the board.

About Hans:

Hans van Rijn is a public finance and public administration specialist with close to 25 years of work experience, mostly in countries across Asia and the Pacific. 

Since 2007, he has worked with the Asian Development Bank, currently with the East Asia Department, where he focuses on the strengthening of public financial management, the financing of local government, local government debt management and sovereign wealth management in Mongolia and the People’s Republic of China. Over the years, he’s developed into an experienced project manager and team leader. He’s been co-leading several major ADB financed COVID-19 emergency operations in Mongolia since the start of the pandemic in 2020.

Hans previously worked with ADB’s Pacific Operations, its Independent Evaluation Department and the Governance & Finance Group.

Prior to joining the ADB, Hans worked as both a short-term and long-term consultant for a variety of donor organizations, including two residential postings in Nepal and Ghana.
