Think of that one leader that you did not trust. What were the specific reasons why? I would argue that they fall in one of the following areas. 

 

1. Care - does that individual have as much interest about you as themselves?
2. Sincerity - did they say what they mean and mean what they say?
3. Reliability - a little different than sincerity
4. Competency - they don’ have the level of training or skills needed.

 

I am beginning a video series on trust.

 

Think of the individual that you thought of earlier.

 

Let’s define it first. I like the definition by Charles Feltman and his book “The Thin Book of Trust”

 

Definition:  “Making something that you hold important (or value) to you, vulnerable to others.”

 

Critical Thinking Questions:

1. When folks rank their own trustworthiness, do you rank yourself higher or others?
2. How do you build trust?
3. Of the four above which is the most important area to work on?

Does your career ladder lean against the right building?  How do you find out? Consider aligning the following three areas

1. Purpose
2. Potential
3. Motivations

Let’s walk through a case study to see how to apply the above suggestion.

Now think about yourself as you are looking at your career? Where are tensions? Maybe these three areas are not in alignment. Ask yourself what is my purpose?  Define it. What is your potential if you stay in this role? What are your motivators, intrinsic or extrinsic?  Get them in alignment and your ladder will be up agains the right building.

Welcome to 2025! We are at that point to set goals, resolutions or choose a word.

This year my word is fitness. I will use this word to set goals for myself personally and professionally. Let’s walk through an example. What is at your top professional goal?

I will use A, B, C to assess the goal I want to achieve.

A - Affect - emotions?

B - Behavior- what will I do?

C- Cognitive- what do I want to be thinking?

You can apply this to a personal goal also. We will come back and revisit the goals you have set.

The United States has transitioned from the great resignation to the great detachment. Data is coming from Gallup; gives us a big picture of employment and engagement.

This is a time in the US, the rate of individuals looking for new opportunities is the greatest it has been since 2015. This results in lower engagement and dissatisfaction. Only 18% say they are pleased with their employer.

This is a result of reorganization and disruption. There are higher expectations from both employers and employees.

Does this reflect your organization? Do you have lower productivity? Less engagement? How do you fix it?

Let’s talk about it…how did this holiday come to be?

How many people does your leadership impact?  Let’s quantify that today.

 

Think of the best leader you have? What impact did they have on you? When did you talk about those leaders?

 

Think of the worst leader you had? Did they have an impact on those around you? Where did you talk about them?

 

What is the impact you are having. Are others talking about you positively? 

 

Think about your direct reports, colleagues and stakeholders. Let’s put some numbers on how many people you impact.

 

It is incredible how quickly those numbers will grow.  Take time and quantify it and see what impact you are having.

November, the great American month!

 

Election day, Veterans Day, USMC birthday, & Thanksgiving!

 

Let’s talk about Election Day!.  In 1845 Congress passed a law that election day would be the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. 

 

Each state ran their own elections and it was affecting each others results, Congress decided to do something about it.  Listen to learn more things that affected this decision and how we arrived at the current day.

How do you handle events that occur in a toxic workplace or events that could could cause a toxic workplace?

 

Think of these three principles.

 

1. Control:  who can you control? You can control yourself, and your reaction.
2. Depersonalization: what does this mean for the larger organization?
3. The One Thing: what is the one thing that if I did it would make everything easier?  (“The One Thing” book by Gary Keller

 

 

How do I know if this will turn into a toxic workplace?  Follow your gut, review the above and be professional throughout it all.
