  • SESSION 122- WISDOM - It's Going To Be Worth It

“I'm not telling you that it's going to be easy, I'm telling you that it's going to be worth it.”

Somewhere along the way, we've bought into a lie, the lie sets the expectation that we are supposed to have this simple life. Life is just supposed to flow, and there's going to be no obstacles, struggles, and difficulties. Maybe you receive the gospel message similar to that. I know that when I was young I heard a lot of different messages similar to that. Christ in your life will magically fix everything and he will miraculously deliver you from all your addictions. Just go to the altar and let the prophet lay his hand on you.
Yet experience and life are quite different from these one step philosophies. Sometimes we have to go through some pain and struggle a bit. The struggle of the caterpillar gives the butterfly the strength to fly. We have to go through some stuff to actually achieve some success in this recovery journey. So the expectation that this is going to somehow be easy needs to be put to rest. It is called the narrow path for a reason.
    There is nothing easy about…

    avoiding temptations

    trusting God

    dealing with triggers

    managing anger

    mastering your impulses

    taking responsibility

    practicing awareness

    forsaking excuses

    knowing your worth

    being established in your identity

    forgiving yourself and others

None of those are easy, and none of those strokes the ego. These are things that bring no gratification to the flesh. They are all spiritual things that must happen for growth and development to take place inside of our life. They are difficult, but they are worth it.

I picture it like we're going through life with a backpack and it has a lot of weight in it. Within this backpack is the weight of our sins, transgressions, addictions, choices, consequences, and it is heavy, and it is a lot of work. The idea is this, that along this new journey, we're going to get a new mindset. We are going to take this baggage and the stuff we are holding on to, and we are going to take it out piece by piece. Then as we do that, the load lightens and we walk in joy. So going through the pain and struggle is part of the process to get to the other side of victory.

  • Session 121 - Walking In The Awareness Of God

This week I speak about how being aware of God will allow you to experience the fullness of life. His presence is something that you don’t recognize every day, but he is ever-present and always speaking. Pay attention to be fully aware of God.

    Knowing God

To be fully aware of God is to know who He is. By knowing who He is, you will recognize that it is God who speaks and guides you.

    1. Notice that God is speaking. Acknowledge His presence and voice.

    2. Express your gratitude for giving that connection. When God speaks, it is for your good because He wants to put you back on track.

    3. Be intimately acquainted with God. He is not far to hear your voice; He is within you. Establish a strong relationship with Him.

    4. Be aware through the senses. Recognize that even in the ordinariness of the day, it is God who shows Himself to you through everything around you.

    5. Recognize and understand God’s character and nature. Know what He wants and align yourself to the desires of your heart.

    6. Know God’s Voice. You may be bombarded with all the surrounding voices, but you need to pay attention to what the Master says through reading the scriptures.

The Benefits of Awareness of God

Being aware of God makes a significant impact on your life as it changes your perspective, beliefs, and actions.

    1. It allows you to be strong and do exploits. The strength that comes from God will empower you to overcome temptations.

    2. You will know the truth, and it will make you free.

    3. You will live differently, knowing that He and His blessings are within you.

    4. You will be filled with the fullness of God.

    5. You will be a partaker of Divine Nature and enjoy the privilege of being the son of a king.

    Practical Application

You may be caught up with your work, doing everything to be successful. With everything that has been draining you, you need to be still. Take a few minutes to be silent, feel what is going on, and communicate with God. Be still and know that He is God.

  • Session 120 - WISDOM - It Doesn't Matter How Slowly You Go As Long As You Do Not Stop
Progress sometimes is slow. I remember going over my recovery journey and it was starting pretty much one addiction at a time. It was a process that happened throughout a couple of years, and slowly but surely one addiction fell off and then another, and then another.
The danger of trying to take on the whole elephant all at the same time. We pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and say,  “I'm  going to quit every single sin, and I'm going to live holy.” We will fail to understand that God's holiness is often progressive, and that is, it happens little by little, step by step.  These things fall off as we progress upon the path that God wants us to progress on.
Yet often, we grab our club and we beat ourselves up because we haven't overcome a certain situation and or addiction yet. We need to give yourselves a little grace and take it easy on yourself. Don't try to walk on water if you're 100 miles away from the lake. Get to the lake first, right? Begin one thing at a time and progress forward.
What does that mean? That means if you are tackling alcohol, I wouldn't tackle nicotine at the same time. Focus first on getting sober and getting some clarity inside of your mindset and your belief system first. Get some positive routines beginning to happen in your life first. So when you step to conquer the next addiction, you already have a victory under your belt. When you face challenges in this manner, you're communicating to yourself that God is working through you and that you have the power to overcome.
If you're trying to do everything, you're communicating something different to your brain. Trying to eat the whole elephant in one sitting is exhausting. This will be a burden to you, and the load of this mindset will depress you and pull you down. Move slowly, progress forward, listen to the Spirit of God, and step by step, little by little, you'll see this exceptional transformation beginning to happen inside of your life.

  • Session 119 - Developing Discipline And Self-Control
In this week's lesson, I talk about "awareness of self-control," as a key to achieving your best state in terms of family, finances, fitness, and faith. With your thoughts and belief system, you may believe that you are not in control. But if you're not in control who is?
    1. Having self-control allows you to achieve your objectives in a much easier fashion.
    2. Self-control lessens fear and uncertainties in life. If you have more discipline in earning money and responsibly spending it, you will not have to worry about crises and natural disasters.
    3. Self-control frees you from addiction. If you believe that you have control in your actions, you will not relinquish control over to your vices.
    4. With self-control comes more excellent mental health. Self-control reduces your cognitive dissonance and allows you to appreciate yourself more.
    5. Self-control gives you greater intimacy inside of relationships. You will have meaningful relationships once you learn to control your sexual desires.
    6. Self-control increases self-fulfillment in life. Once you have identified your goals in life, you will do something about it when you realize you are in control.
    7. Are You In Control Of Your Life?

This question has theological applications that the speaker discussed.

      1. Genesis 1:26  says that you are created in the image and likeness of God so you may have the rule over your realm; you must take responsibility.
      2. The Parable of the Talents explains that men are supposed to use what God has placed in their hands.
      3. Proverbs 16:32 reminds you it is better to have self-control than just to be powerful.
      4. 1 Corinthians 9:25 motivates you to strive for mastery. Make efforts to be elite.
      5. 1 Corinthians 9:26 tells you that you are not purposeless.
      6. James 1:13 evokes you that God cannot be tempted, and he will never tempt you.
      7. Embodying Self-Control

Always remember that you are born with free-will, and therefore, you are responsible for your actions. Submit yourself unto God. Establish what you want. Align your actions with your core values and belief system and always hold on to your ‘why.’

      8. SESSION 118 - Becoming A Master Of Your Impulses

One of the biggest challenges men in Recovery face is impulse control. The 2 keys to victory in this area are knowing and fully understanding that you can choose not to commit a sin. Second, is knowing why you want to control the impulses to begin with. Thoughts and feelings can create impulses that cause a reaction, and if you act on every whim or trigger, you will end up with extreme suffering.

Impulses affect every area of our frame and being, and without control, you will struggle with being successful. Most times, our areas of struggle are indicators of lack of impulse control.

Being able to control yourself and your words makes it easy for you to keep and maintain relationships. Not everything you think needs to be said or done. With impulse control, you make better choices. At forks in the road, without proper self-control by the Holy Spirit’s help, you make wrong choices.

        What is impulse control?

Impulse control is increasing the time between trigger and response. Impulse control is identifying your trigger point and understanding the consequences of potential actions.

Impulse control is analyzing the potential consequences of your impulsive actions, if possible, with another person you are vulnerable with.  If David did this, he would have foreseen the potential effect of sleeping with Bathsheba and would have made a better choice.

Impulse control is to practice impulse override. Impulse control is choosing to respond instead of reacting by aligning to the paradigm of God. Impulse control is to stop, pause, and think.

Impulse control is bringing yourself into a place of clarity, magnifying God within your heart, and bringing yourself to where you realize God’s plans for your life.

We are made biologically with the fight, flight, or freeze response. Different people have their respective reactions to issues in line with biology. However, with God’s Spirit in us, we can analyze the situation correctly and pick the best option for a reaction.

      9. SESSION 117 - Examine Ourselves Introspective Self-discovery.

Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!

The bible gives us the admonition to examine ourselves, this implies introspective self-discovery. There are many things that we must realize about ourselves to grow inside of recovery.

Self-awareness is one of the most important things to grow inside of this recovery lifestyle. Awareness is understanding your desires and being honest about your strengths and weaknesses. Our convictions and value systems spring from both God-awareness and self-awareness.

Being present in the moment is one of the crucial things you can start practicing to achieve: self-awareness. Most people make the mistake of projecting themselves into the future and meditating and clinging on to the past, in which the Apostle Paul stated is not a very productive habit.

The bible teaches us if we want to let go of all the shame, guilt, and regrets, do not dwell on things you cannot control. Jesus stated that today has enough problems on its own.  The same goes for just focusing on the future because tomorrow is not here yet, and it may not come. So the best thing you should do is exert all your energy on today and don't let the future distract you from the present moment.

      10. SESSION 116 - Being Willing To Experience The Abundant Life

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

How many times does God want to do something amazing but it doesn’t come to pass because we’re not willing?

Israel limited God in the wilderness

Jesus couldn’t do many marvelous things in his hometown because of unbelief

God desires all men to be saved, but that won’t take place because all men are not willing

All these examples scream the outcome of the abundant life is through the willingness to walk on the path.

We won't experience fulfillment apart from willingness.

Are you willing to do what is required to have a successful marriage?

Are you willing to do what is required to have a strong spiritual man?

Are you willing to do what is required to have a healthy body?

Are you willing to do what is required to have a healthy bank account?

God can desire holistic living for you but if you’re not willing to walk in it, it will never happen.
