Summary: You can win every point in an argument and still lose the person across the table. This week, Carrie shares the story of a mom who chose grace over being right mid-conflict with her son, and breaks down why chasing restoration instead of winning is the shift that actually protects your relationships. Takeaways: Every conflict has two separate outcomes: who's right, and whether the relationship is still standing. You can win one and lose the other. The need to be right is rarely about the facts. It's about safety, control, or feeling valued. Meeting someone where they are will open a door that correction alone never will. Before your next hard conversation, ask: what does this person actually need from me right now? Do you look like you’re listening while your brain is already drafting your response? In this episode, Carrie Hensler breaks down the difference between listening to respond and listening to understand, and why strong communication starts with actually paying attention to what someone is saying. You’ll learn how to notice your inner “draft,” let silence do its work, and ask one more question before adding your own story, opinion, or advice. Carrie also shares a personal story about realizing she was being a “social bulldozer” and what it taught her about listening in relationships and leadership. In this episode: Why looking engaged doesn’t always mean you’re listening How to catch yourself mentally drafting your response Why silence can make conversations better One simple question that can deepen connection How better listening strengthens relationships and leadership Resources mentioned: Free IMPACT Energy Assessment: carriehensler.com/impact-opt-in

Small Daily Choices That Shape Your Character Character isn't built in the big, dramatic moments. It's built in the small, repeated ones you've already forgotten by lunch. In this episode, Carrie shares a personal story about a friendship that was quietly shaping how she talked about her husband, and the small decision that changed the trajectory of her marriage. In this episode: Why character works like compound interest, not a single deposit How the people around you are setting your defaults, whether you notice or not Why the small choice is the leadership moment, not a warm-up for it Resources mentioned: Take the IMPACT Energy Assessment: carriehensler.com/impact-opt-in Explore the Conflict Confidence Workshop: carriehensler.com/conflict New episodes drop every Tuesday. Ever had an entire conversation in your head that you never actually had out loud? Maybe you call it avoiding drama, keeping the peace, or simply “not being confrontational.”

In this episode, we’re unpacking why conflict can feel so personal, what your brain and body are actually doing when tension shows up, and why avoidance often costs us more than the conversation itself.

I’ll also share a story from early in my career involving a very creative workaround that helped me avoid a conversation I desperately needed to have.

You’ll walk away with a simple question to help you identify the conversation you’ve been working around instead of actually having.

Why Working With Them Feels So Hard (And It's Not What You Think) The Leadership Groundwork Podcast — Episode 3 You know that coworker who makes you take a breath before every meeting. The one who slows you down when you're trying to move, or pushes forward when you're trying to think. You've probably called them difficult. They're not. They're untranslated. In this episode, Carrie shares the story of a comment her boss made that took her years to fully understand — and unpacks why most of what we label as a "difficult person" is actually a wiring difference we haven't learned to read yet. In this episode: Why friction between people is information, not a verdict How the IMPACT Types framework explains why certain personalities clash The one question that turns an argument into a negotiation between two legitimate priorities A simple next step for translating the person you've written off, instead of just tolerating them Mentioned in this episode: Take the free IMPACT Energy Assessment → carriehensler.com Learn more about the Leadership Groundwork Mastermind → carriehensler.com/leadershipgroundwork New episodes drop every Tuesday. Do you struggle to say no without immediately feeling guilty? Maybe you agree to things you don't have the time or energy to take on. Maybe you've become the person everyone depends on, and now you're carrying responsibilities that somehow became yours along the way. Or maybe you know exactly what boundary you need to set, but the thought of disappointing someone makes you second-guess yourself. In this episode of the Leadership Groundwork Podcast, we're talking about why setting boundaries can feel so difficult, especially when being needed has become connected to your sense of value. You'll learn how to recognize when you're carrying responsibilities that don't actually belong to you, the difference between a simple “Sorry, no” and a more complicated “Sorry, not anymore,” and how to stop allowing guilt to make your decisions for you. Because being capable of carrying something and being responsible for carrying it are two completely different things. In This Episode, You'll Learn: Why overcommitting often goes deeper than poor time management How being needed can become tangled up with your sense of value Why every yes costs you something How to identify what your boundaries are actually protecting The difference between saying “Sorry, no” and “Sorry, not anymore” Why you don't need to build a legal case every time you decline a request How to tell the difference between healthy guilt and someone else's disappointment Why capable people often confuse ability with responsibility What Jesus' example can teach us about compassion, priorities, and limits A practical way to identify the boundaries you need to set

You don't need a title to be leading. If people are watching how you handle pressure, how you communicate, or how you show up when things get hard, you're already leading, whether anyone's decided to call you a leader yet or not. In this episode, we'll unpack the quiet trap so many high-capacity people fall into: downplaying their own influence because they don't have the position to "prove" it. From the mom shaping the culture of her home to the coworker everyone turns to when things go sideways, real leadership rarely shows up with a title attached. It shows up in the small, unnoticed choices nobody's grading you on.

In this episode, you'll learn: Why leadership is a posture, not a position, and what that actually means for your day-to-day The hidden cost of ignoring the influence you already carry What separates the people who navigate hard moments well from everyone else (hint: it's not intelligence or rank).

"Leadership isn't something you put on like a blazer when people are watching. It's who you become when no one is watching at all."

New episodes drop every Tuesday. Until then, keep laying the groundwork to lead yourself well.

Hey friend, welcome to Leadership Groundwork. I'm Carrie Hensler, and this podcast is for the leader who looks like they've got it together and feels like they're barely holding on. You're second-guessing decisions you already made. You're snapping at the people you love most and wondering why. You said yes again, and you're already regretting it. Every week we talk about self-leadership, rhythms that actually hold up under pressure, boundaries that don't come with a side of guilt, and how to have the hard conversation instead of rehearsing it in your head for the tenth time. This is the practical, faith-grounded stuff nobody handed you. New episodes drop every Tuesday. Come join me.
