Are you a new leader? Maybe you are a “seasoned” leader? Well, here is a show and a book that is aimed at new leaders, but the seasoned leader can glean from. It is this time of year that in baseball we are getting close to “Spring training”. The new players “the rookies”, and the season players “the veterans” all come together and work on one thing…fundamentals. No matter how long you have played the game you always must be working on the fundamentals. The same is true of Leadership.
On this Episode of A New Direction, Best Selling Author Home – Giant Leap Consulting returns with his new book “Leadership Two Words At A Time”. While it is purposely written to the new person in leadership, the fact is, this book is great for any leader to get back to the fundamentals and remind yourself why you are in leadership in the first place. The book is educational, entertaining, poignant, and full of actions that you can take to improve your leadership.
Bill Treasure latest book Leadership Two Words at a Time is a fun and edutaining read. Each chapter title is only two words, and then Bill breaks down each of these leadership truths into bite size pieces so that they can be easily digested by anyone. While the book makes a point, and a strong one at that, Bill uses his sense of humor to take a look at ourselves and how we are leading others so that we can smile and move on to mastery in our leadership.
What is more Leadership Two Words at a Time also ends each chapter with a Two-word Bonus Tip, Questions for you to think about, action items to work on, and after each section asks you to commit to an oath that you will work on to become a stronger more effective leader. The book is a quick read, well written, and really a lot of fun to read. If you would like to connect with Bill you can reach him through his website: Home – Giant Leap Consulting.

To say that we are living in some turbulent times is an understatment. It is during turbulent times like these that we are all tested, but it is where we see great leadership emerge, and at the same time weak leadership to fail. One trait that is for sure in great leadership is reslience. The ability to keep going when we keep getting hit. When circumstances and economies surround and attack our business. It is during those times where resilient leadership must show up and lead the way. In this episode of A New Direction Ali Grovue & Mike Watson encourage us as leaders though six interrconnected habits of reslient leadership. Whether you are aspiring to leadership, are in leadership and want to become even greater this show is for you!
Ali Grovue and Mike Watson‘s book is entitled Rise Up: Leadership Habits for Turbulent Times. It is 100 pages of powerpacked practical mindsets and behaviors that anyone can practice and will see improvement in their leadership. We have all been through and continue to go through crisis. For the last two plus years we have been dealing with the pandemic. We have seen businesses crumble, people scatter, emotions rising. The truth is leading in a crisis is not easy. Now we have Russia invading and starting an unprovoked war with the Ukraine. Talk about leading in a crisis, no one is envious of what Volodymyr Zelensky the President of the Ukraine must face every day. When it comes to leading in a crisis this week’s guest on A New Direction Major General John Gronski is no stranger to living in that world.
Major General Gronski served in Iraq during the Iraq war. He served in Ramadi which was called “The Bloodiest Place on the Planet”. He led soldiers from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. He knows what Leading in a Crisis is, and the price of lives that war takes. What is more he has been successful at leading. He has written an outstanding book entitled, “Iron Sharpened Leadership“. In this episode we will talk about some of the book, but we will mostly deal with, “How do you lead in a crisis”? How should we prepare? What do you do in a crisis? How do you keep your people together in a crisis? And General Gronski will also compare and contrast the leadership styles of Vladamir Putin of Russia, and Volodymyr Zelensky of the Ukraine. It is a powerful show! You can contact General Gronski at www.johngronski.com

Now add to that you are female in the Marine Corps…what do you think it will take to be a respected leader? When it comes to leadership my guest on this episode of A New Direction co-author Angie Morgan (U.S. Marine ret’d) doesn’t simply talk the talk when it comes to leadership…she walks it, lives it, and exemplifies it. If anyone can tell you what leadership behaviors you need to be successful in your life and business Angie Morgan can.

When it comes to leadership who better than a U.S. Army general is more qualified to talk about it. When you have led thousands of men and women in the midst of brutal, volatile, and dangerous combat, and having to take the responsibility of the lives of all those under his command you better demonstrate great leadership. You not only need to have great leadership knowledge, but you must have characteristics, values, and wisdom that people believe in and want to follow. Major General John L. Gronski (ret’d) is that person, and we have the honor of having him on A New Direction with his book Iron Sharpened Leadership.
General Gronski’s book is in my opinion the essential must read leadership book that you must have on your book shelf. The book literally takes you through the building of a great leader. He divides it into three sections: Character, Competence, and Resiliency. It is the foundation of these qualities that he gives us an advanced class in leadership. “Iron Sharpened Leadership” is practical, pragmatic, will make you think, consider your own values, and will change you. General Gronski fully understands that to be the best leader you need to continually train all four of the areas of your being, i.e. the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. The fact is if you are not growing in these areas, you are dying. “Iron Sharpened Leadership” will encourage you, but more importantly it will change you! Everyone wants to be the one leading the charge, but no one wants the real responsibility that comes with it. Leading others sounds great until you realize it is more than a title. Leading is not about you being in charge. Leading is about taking care of others. Demonstrating you care. Showing them understanding and compassion. Leading is not about giving them fish, or philosophizing about fishing, but taking the time to give them the skills to fish. Leading requires character, the ability to motivate, or at least understand others motivations, it is about making the right hire, helping people adjust through change, dealing with emotional fall out and becoming a servant who understand how to be a good steward of your people and resources. When it comes to leading others there is a great deal to consider, but thankfully on this episode of A New Direction Author and Leadership Expert Will Schirmer leads us into becoming more successful when it comes to leadership.
William Schirmer‘s book “The Leadership Core: Competencies for Successfully Leading Others” is literally a toolkit on leadership. Will Schirmehttps://www.willschirmerofficial.com/r has synthesized years of research on leadership and gives you insights into your leadership growth. The book starts with the character of a leader and works it way through issues of motivation, hiring, onboarding, managing performance, servancy and stewardship and so much more! “The Leadership Core” is truly a book that you can use as a reference guide to help you navigate you business or organization whether you are new to leading or have been leading for decades. It is filled with tips and perhaps leadership hacks that will help you in nearly every situation you may come across as a leader.

John Wooden was the greatest college basketball coach of all time. He won 10 National Championships and 4 undefeated seasons while at UCLA. Some have even said, that John Wooden was the greatest coach of any sport…it would be hard to argue against him. As great as John Wooden was as a basketball coach he was even a better coach of life. His players loved him, and he invested himself in them. His leadership was legendary and still is today. We are so fortunate to have with us on this episode of A New Direction Lynn Guerin who spent the last 25+ years with coach Wooden up until his last dying words. He worked with Coach Wooden to develop a coaching model for success and leadership. And continues today to coach companies the “Wooden Way”.
Along with Jason Lavin, Lynn Guerin have written the book “Coach ‘Em Way Up” based on the fundamental principles espoused by Coach Wooden. The book is practical and insightful into the Leadership and success lesson Coach Wooden practiced every single day and taught to his teams. Always the engineer he created his “Pyramid of Success” which would guide him daily and continues to guide others who follow it. The book “Coach ‘Em Way Up” is filled with not only tremendous insights, but also work sheets to help you coach yourself (which is the most important person to begin with), and use with your teams. There is also an online assessment that I highly recommend you should take. I took it twice (the first time I was in denial). To access the assessment click on or copy and paste https://www.thejohnrwoodencourse.com/the-pyramid-of-success-assessment-for-individuals and for A New Direction listeners if you use the code “Coach50” you will get 50% off the assessment. There are so many theories on Leadership it can get quite exhausting. In fact Leadership theory is wide and so vast you may find yourself throwing your arms up in the air and saying, “I’m just going to do leadership my way”. Well it is confusing. And it causes us to ask more questions, such as: “Is leadership the same as leading?”, “Is managing the same as leadership?”, “What skills are necessary for leadership?”, “Do I have to have a title or position to perform leadership?”, and so many more! This makes the ideas of leadership even more daunting. Can we simplify all this in someway? And the answer is YES! Gary DePaul, PhD joins us on this episode of A New Direction with his latest book “What the Heck is Leadership and Why Should I Care?”
What the Heck is Leadership is really a book about breaking leadership down into some basic fundamental principles that are consistent with successful leadership. Is this an exhaustive list? Of course not, but if one were to practice the 7 principles laid about by Gary DePaul you would be much further than the majority of self-proclaimed people in leadership. What the Heck is Leadership anyway is a perfect example that there are actions that we can all perform to enhance our leadership from whatever position we find ourselves in. While the book is not a long read it is a book that will stop and make you consider if you are truly demonstrating leadership from where you are right now and certainly if you have a “growth mindset” ways for you to change.
Our sponsors are so important to A New Direction please do me a favor and just say, “thank you” to them. I am truly grateful for all you who do reach out!

Often as a executive coach I am asked the question, “How do I improve employee motivation?” or “How do I motivate this employee?”. In fact, it is really the wrong question, because your employees are motivated, but there are things in your business environment that have “demotivated them”. The reality is you cannot motivate anyone, but you can remove the obstacles or impediments that are interfering with their productivity and performance and their motivation. The truth is you as the leader have to find out what those things are that are demotivating your people remove them and your employees will give you all they have and more. The problem that hinders that advice from being taken? YOU may be the problem! Meaning you as the leader may need to change, and let’s be honest change is difficult.
In this Episode of A New Direction for the first time both co-authors join the show. Dr. Cathy Bush and Dr. Tara Peters discuss their book “The Demotivated Employee”, and I must say this show is a winner! We are going to talk about a leaders reluctance to change, the 5 areas that demotivate employees, the times when the employee in fact needs to make a change because they are in the wrong culture, and so much more! The Demotivated Employee is a fundamentally foundational book that should be read by every business owner, CEO, and employee, it will change the way you look at motivation and if you apply the principles you will have far less motivation problems.
