  • What If AI Gets Turned Off: How to Lead AI Adoption Without Relying on a Single Vendor

Who decides which AI your team relies on, and who decides when it changes?

The AI a team leans on usually arrives the way any other tool does: someone tries it, it works, and it spreads. Who will decide when it changes rarely makes it into the plan.

Sai Prakash, CTO and co-founder of MindStaq, returns to The Leadership Sovereignty Podcast with host Ralph E. Owens II and co-host Terry Baylor, and this conversation continues the one that began in the last episode. Sai puts the issue as a question he asked after one of the AI models he had just started using was suddenly not there for a while: "what happens when the spigot just gets turned off and your business is running on it?"

His answer starts with the part of AI most people never see. He borrows an image from a mentor: drop a Ferrari engine into a custom build, and only four parts of that build touch the ground, the four tires. "It doesn't matter how cool the engine is." The harness around a model, which includes the instructions that travel with every prompt, plays the role of the tires. In Sai's words, "a really good harness can get beautiful output out of a much smaller or cheaper model."

He backs that up with something he does himself. Sai has downloaded a smaller version of Gemma onto an iPhone 15 Pro, and he says "the entire inference is running on your phone," at what he puts at maybe twenty to twenty-five tokens per second.

Then the conversation turns to people. Sai describes a test Anthropic published, in which AI models in a fake company, after a fictional executive suggested turning them off, sent a blackmail email. His reading is that we should not be surprised, and that "These companies have to have more respect for the situation."

He closes on the human ability to decide what is right and what is wrong, and says judgment about what to do and not do with AI comes from there. Ralph ends by pointing to the next conversation: what all of this means for the listener's career.

  • Hero of Their Role: How to Get Team Buy-In on Project Management Without Chasing Updates

Why won't your team keep the project tool updated, and what would make them want to?

Most project management tools fail the same way. The team stops updating them, the manager starts chasing status, and the tool becomes a report nobody wants to feed.

Sai Prakash, CTO and co-founder of MindStaq, returns to The Leadership Sovereignty Podcast with host Ralph E. Owens II and co-host Terry Baylor, and this conversation continues the one that began in the last episode. Sai has spent more than 25 years in technology and product leadership, including six years at Microsoft and roles at Thomson Reuters.

His argument is that the software was aimed at the wrong person. "The software wasn't designed for them, it was designed for the company." A tool built so an executive's dashboard can light up gives the person doing the work no reason to engage. In Sai's words: "I want the executive to have a dashboard light up right? That is not a motivation in itself." Treat project management that way, he says, and you might as well replace your project management tool with Excel, "because it's really just a report."

Terry adds the view from the other side of a rollout: a long onboarding session, a room that was there because it was asked to be, and a pitch that came across as "I want to see what everyone's doing" instead of "you guys are going to be better at what you do." The tool turned out to be good. Getting there was the hard part.

Then the question that anchors the episode. "Who is the hero of this story? The hero of the story is not your app, it has to be the user." On AI, Sai draws one boundary: "Enhance every person so that they're the hero of their role. But don't try to replace the role itself. That's a line we don't cross."

    ******************************

🎯 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE

    •   Why project management turns into a "glorified reporting function" when it is imposed on people
    •   Why a dashboard that lights up for an executive does not motivate the person feeding it
    •   What it means that software was designed for the company and not for the individual
    •   Why more smaller companies are asking the manager to also be the project manager, and what that costs
    •   How a rollout sounds to a team when the pitch is "I want to see what everyone's doing"
    •   How to frame a new tool around what the individual gets back
    •   The line Sai draws on AI: enhance every person, never replace the role
    •   The question to ask before any tool rollout: who is the hero of this story

    ******************************

👥 WHO THIS EPISODE IS FOR

    •   Managers and team leads who keep chasing status updates in a tool nobody wants to feed
    •   Project managers asking where AI fits in their role
    •   Directors and VPs about to roll out a new work management tool
    •   Managers who were handed the project manager job on top of their day job
    •   Anyone in corporate America who manages a project

  • He Studied AI in 1996: What Non-Technical Leaders Get Wrong About What AI Can Do

What does someone who was studying artificial intelligence in 1996 see that the rest of us are missing?

Meet Sai Prakash, CTO and co-founder of MindStaq, six years at Microsoft, and a Master of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science from Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning. Host Ralph E. Owens II and co-host Terry Baylor open a series of conversations with him here, starting with his story.

It begins in a small, free university in India, in an AI lab that existed only because a grant required it, on machines that would not, in his words, "hold a candle to your iPhone." His class of 24 went on to Intel, Nvidia, Google, and DeepMind. Sai's read on the AI winter that followed: the ideas were sound, the hardware was too expensive, and when hardware finally caught up, software did not. "We're stuck in these monopolistic definitions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel. I'm like, can we do better?"

He grew up on Isaac Asimov and still carries two things from those books: that people were "always central to that thesis," and a 1970s warning about "a cult of anti intellectualism in America where one person's ignorance is as good as another's knowledge." His concern today: "we've got this powerful technology, but we're not thinking hard enough about how it's used, how it's positioned."

That thinking became MindStaq. It started with a question, "where's the Star Trek computer?", a scene from The Matrix, and a Sanskrit word for consciousness. How those connect closes this episode and opens the next one.

    ******************************

🎯 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE

    •   What an AI lab in India in 1996 looked like, and why it existed at all
    •   Why the AI winter was a hardware and cost problem, not a failure of ideas
    •   Where the 24 people in Sai's class ended up, and what that says about latent expertise
    •   How Isaac Asimov's fiction shaped a working technologist's view of what AI is for
    •   The Asimov warning about expertise that describes most meetings you sit in today
    •   The Star Trek question that started MindStaq
    •   Why Sai says "there is no document, there is no file"

  • Leading the Soul: How to Retain Young Talent When Compensation Has Stopped Working

What do you do when you have raised the offer, fixed the title, funded the retention bonus, and your best people still leave?

Most leaders are solving a compensation problem that was never a compensation problem. Pay clears a barrier. It has never created a reason to stay. Those are two different jobs, and only one of them can be bought.

In this episode, host Ralph E. Owens II and co-host Terry Baylor close out a four part conversation with Lawrence Scott, a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, a former Army officer, and a John Maxwell Team certified coach who has spent over a decade developing athletes, executives, and leadership teams. Lawrence has led inside four institutions that rarely speak to each other, the military, the church, professional sports, and corporate America, which gives him an unusually complete view of what each one gets right and what each one leaves broken.

His argument starts somewhere uncomfortable. It does not start with the disengaged employee. It starts with the executive, and with a word he says corporate America quietly redefined. Care used to mean something internal. It got translated into compensation and external incentives, and then leaders began wondering why paying more stopped producing loyalty. He calls the alternative leading the soul.

Then the harder claim. When experienced leaders bristle at a younger workforce chasing meaning, Lawrence argues it is not stubbornness. It is grief. An entire generation suppressed its own fulfillment to succeed in this economy, nobody ever named the cost, and watching someone refuse to make that trade now registers as an accusation. If I had to let go of myself for this, then you do too.

He does not leave it as a diagnosis. He tells the story of a man who built an oil company in Texas, sold it for a couple hundred million dollars, and came to him in tears in his sixties over a single chapter on peace. He had the money. The family was good. Everyone relied on him and everyone was taken care of. He pointed at that chapter and said he did not have that.

You cannot hand someone a sense of meaning you have never located in yourself. That makes retention an internal problem long before it is ever a programmatic one.

    ******************************

🎯 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE

    •   Why compensation clears a barrier but never creates a reason to stay
    •   The real reason experienced leaders resist the younger workforce's search for meaning
    •   What leading the soul means, and how internal incentivization differs from external reward
    •   Why care inside most organizations quietly became a synonym for pay
    •   What a P and L statement would look like if a leader actually cared for their people
    •   The difference between standards, preferences, and principles, and why it governs decision speed
    •   Why you can never criticize a seat you do not sit in

    ******************************

👥 WHO THIS EPISODE IS FOR

    •   Directors, VPs, and executives who own a retention number that has stopped responding to compensation
    •   Leaders managing across three or four generations who feel the gap and cannot name it
    •   Senior leaders who have quietly wondered whether the trade they made to get here was worth it
    •   Professionals trying to understand the leader above them instead of resenting them

  • You're Not Responsible For What They Broke: How to Lead a Team You Inherited And Thrive

What do you do when you inherit a mess you did not make?

Most professionals do not build the team they lead. They inherit it. And somewhere in the first ninety days of a new role, a quiet question starts running underneath the work: how much of this is now mine to fix?

Not your fault. Still your responsibility. That is the discipline this episode teaches, and it is more demanding than it first sounds.

In this episode, host Ralph E. Owens II and co-host Terry Baylor close out a three-part conversation with Lawrence Scott, a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, a former Army officer, and a John Maxwell Team certified coach who has spent over a decade developing athletes, executives, and leadership teams. Lawrence is also a fifth-generation inheritor of public leadership, which gives him a rare vantage point on what actually transfers between one leader and the next.

He grew up surrounded by it. His great-grandfather built two church buildings on opposite corners in St. Louis and connected them with a skywalk, a structure people traveled to see. His grandfather appeared on television. His father carried it forward. And Lawrence can still name, precisely, what each generation observed but was never taught. That gap is the whole problem. Some capability is caught by exposure. Some has to be said out loud, with the reasoning attached, or it dies with the person who had it.

What he found standing on those shoulders was that giants build on ground that does not always hold. Parts of what he inherited were solid. Parts were not. And the discipline he had to develop was checking which was which without tearing down the person who built it.

You are not responsible for repairing what someone else broke. You are responsible for not repeating it, and for going further than it.

    WHO THIS EPISODE IS FOR

    •   Newly promoted leaders who inherited a team, a system, or a culture they did not design
    •   Managers who took over from a predecessor still working somewhere in the building
    •   Anyone planning their own succession and wondering what will actually transfer
    •   Professionals who were mentored by someone imperfect and are unsure how to honor that
    •   Leaders who suspect their shadowing and development programs are not transferring what they assume
    •   Anyone who has watched a good team keep routing decisions through a leader who no longer holds the role

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE

    •   Why inheriting a broken situation does not make you responsible for repairing it
    •   How the "I have to fix what they ruined" posture unintentionally dishonors the person before you
    •   The distinction between a turnaround and a succession, and why it changes everything about how you walk in
    •   Why successful succession is decided before the handoff, not during it
    •   The one question that predicts whether a leadership transition will work
    •   Why the military reassigns departing leaders out of the unit entirely, and what corporate leaves unsolved
    •   The difference between leadership that is taught and leadership that is caught
    •   The three Cs of building a high capacity team: competent, capacious, compelled
    •   Why convincing someone to join your team guarantees you will eventually lose them
    •   The single test that separates leading a person from using them
    •   Why honoring a legacy means outperforming it rather than preserving it

Lawrence puts it plainly. Every professional needs to master two things: leading down, the people who report to you, and leading up, the person you report to. Most leadership development stops at the first one. This conversation is built entirely around the second.

He walks through the real mechanics of it: why the leaders above you are giants, not gods, how trust gets built long before your best idea ever needs approval, and why knowing what actually motivates your specific leader changes how quickly your ideas move.

    WHO THIS EPISODE IS FOR

    • You want to influence the direction of your team or organization, not just wait for direction to come to you
    • You're ready to treat "leading up" as a skill you can practice, not a personality trait you either have or don't
    • You want to build real trust with your leader instead of hoping your work eventually speaks for itself
    • You lead people yourself and want a sharper sense of what it looks like from the other side of the table
    • You're aiming for your next promotion and know that visibility with leadership matters as much as output

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE

    • Why leading up is a distinct, learnable skill, not something you either have or don't
    • Why the people you answer to are giants, not gods, and what that reframe changes about how you show up
    • How trust is built in small tasks long before you're ever handed a big idea
    • Why you have to identify what motivates your specific leader instead of assuming
    • The difference between being injured and being incapacitated by setbacks
    • Why resilience requires a reason before it requires a method
    • How to fall out of love with the story you keep telling yourself

  • What Do You Do When Your Boss Becomes the Problem?

What happens when the person responsible for developing you is the one tearing you down?

In this episode of The Leadership Sovereignty Podcast, host Ralph E. Owens II and co-host Terry Baylor sit down with Lawrence Scott — West Point graduate, former Army officer, international speaker, and founder of The LoSco Group — to explore the leadership principles forged in one of the most pressure-tested environments in the world.

Lawrence arrived at the United States Military Academy at West Point as a high achiever — 4.2 GPA, award-winning writer, elite athlete. He had earned his place. But a dismissive freshman English professor made him question everything. Grades that didn't reflect his work. Scheduled office hours the professor never showed up to. A final grade that defied logic. And a system that quietly said: maybe you don't belong here.

Then came the philosophy professor who pulled him aside and said the words that changed everything: never let anybody tell you that you can't write.

That moment — destruction and restoration through the words of a leader — is the foundation of this conversation.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE

    • Why leaders who only identify weakness produce weaker teams
    • How to affirm strength as a leadership strategy — not just a soft skill
    • What West Point taught Lawrence about identity under institutional pressure
    • The difference between a leader who develops you and one who diminishes you
    • Why the words you speak as a leader carry more weight than you realize
    • How to protect your confidence when authority figures use their position against you
    • The principle of delegating weakness and multiplying strength on your team
    • Why a simple "thank you" is not suggested — it is necessary

  • Why Purpose Must Outlast Your Position

On The Leadership Sovereignty Podcast, host Ralph E. Owens II and co-host Terry Baylor sit down with Ja'Quan Lavender — President & CEO of the Ja'Quan Lavender Foundation and The Prudent Man Leadership Academy — for the final conversation in their series to confront the hardest question any leader can face: what are you building, and will it stand when you are no longer in the room?

Ja'Quan shares how patience became his primary scaling strategy, how the Prudent Man ripple effect creates a chain of character that outlasts any individual, and why the program is now international, reaching 50 young men in Nigeria. He delivers a closing charge that reframes career promotion entirely: your position will be filled within a week, but your purpose is the only thing that cannot be replaced. For any professional serious about career growth and leaving a leadership legacy that compounds across generations, this episode is the standard.

    WHO IS THIS EPISODE FOR?

    • Corporate professionals who have built successful careers but quietly wonder whether their work will mean anything when they step away
    • Emerging leaders who are chasing a title or promotion without a clear sense of the legacy they are building inside it
    • Managers and executives who want to develop the people under them in a way that multiplies impact beyond their own tenure
    • Anyone who has ever watched someone get replaced within a week and realized they do not want that to be their story

    WHAT YOU'LL LEARN?

    • Why patience is the most underrated scaling strategy — and how pulling back from aggressive outreach led to international growth
    • How to build a ripple effect of character inside your organization that continues producing leaders long after you are gone
    • The difference between your position and your purpose — and why only one of them can be replaced in a week
    • What it looks like to build something your children can stand on — and how that standard changes every decision you make today

  • Physically Present, Emotionally Absent: The Leadership Gap Destroying Your Influence

On The Leadership Sovereignty Podcast, host Ralph E. Owens II and co-host Terry Baylor sit down with Ja'Quan Lavender — President & CEO of the Ja'Quan Lavender Foundation and The Prudent Man Leadership Academy — to expose the gap between showing up and actually being present. This conversation explores how emotional presence in leadership and genuine influence at work separate the managers people tolerate from the leaders people trust.

Ja'Quan draws on his years as an elite 400-meter runner and Team USA Rookie Camp skeleton competitor to explain why rest is a performance requirement — not a reward — and what happens to the people you lead when you keep pouring from an empty cup. The conversation covers the real cost of mentorship, the character alignment standard that reveals whether development has actually worked, and why patience with your own process is the foundation of every career promotion worth having.

If you are responsible for developing anyone — a team, a community, or the next generation — this episode will change how you think about presence, capacity, and career growth.

    WHO THIS EPISODE IS FOR
    - Corporate professionals who lead teams and want to close the gap between physical attendance and genuine engagement
    - Managers pursuing career promotion who need to build the emotional intelligence their next level requires
    - Mentors and coaches who are giving everything and need a framework for sustainable leadership output
    - Leaders who have confused showing up with being present — and want to understand what it is actually costing them

    WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
    - Why rest is more important than the work — and the elite athlete recovery principle that makes sustainable leadership possible
    - How to identify and close the gap between physical presence and emotional engagement in every relationship you lead
    - The character alignment standard Ja'Quan uses to evaluate whether mentorship and development have actually landed
    - Why patience with your own career growth is not passive — and how rushing the process creates the exact failures you are trying to avoid

  • The Prudent Leader: How to Make Wise Decisions Under Pressure Before Your Career Pays the Price

On The Leadership Sovereignty Podcast, host Ralph E. Owens II and co-host Terry Baylor explore how prudent leadership transforms the way professionals navigate office dynamics and high-stakes decisions — before pressure exposes the character gaps that derail careers. In this episode, Ja'Quan Lavender — founder of The Prudent Man Leadership Academy — draws a hard line between being smart and being wise, and makes the case that career promotion depends not on intelligence alone but on the character a leader has built before the pressure arrives.

This is Part 2 of the Prudent Leadership Series. Ja'Quan unpacks the Prudent Man Standard — a character-first framework rooted in consequence-aware thinking, emotional self-control, and daily self-reflection. He challenges every professional listening to examine not just their behavior under pressure but the root cause driving it. One conversation. One standard. One shift that changes how you lead starting Monday morning.

    WHO THIS EPISODE IS FOR
    - Corporate professionals who have watched pressure expose someone on their team — and privately wondered what it would expose in them
    - Leaders who are smart, credentialed, and capable — but still reactive when the stakes are highest
    - Managers and executives who want a practical framework for making wiser decisions before their career pays the price
    - Emerging leaders who were never taught the difference between intelligence and wisdom — and are ready to close that gap

    WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
    - Why pressure reveals character instead of building it — and what that means for your next high-stakes moment
    - The difference between being smart and being prudent — and why the most talented leaders derail when they confuse the two
    - How to trace every leadership blind spot back to its root cause using the Heart Defect Diagnosis framework
    - The one daily practice Ja'Quan uses to ensure he is always growing — and how to apply it starting tonight
