Today on the Leaders Huddle we speak with COL (R) Tony Burgess and COL (R) Nate Allen, Co-founders of CompanyCommand.com and PlatoonLeader.org and authors of “Taking the Guidon: Exceptional Leadership at the Company Level.” Fifteen years ago and fresh out of company command, then Captains Burgess and Allen published a book that would quickly become a must-read for all officers preparing to “take the guidon.” Today we sit down with both authors and discuss their impetus for writing the book and take a deep dive into the concepts of “big rocks”, vision, and the characteristics of a winning team. Our discussion with these two leader developers was so great we couldn’t fit it into just one episode. This will be a two part series.

In this week’s episode we bring back MAJ Carla Raisler and 1LT Brock Young for Part 2 of A Deep Dive into the Total Army Concept. We will discuss the challenges the Guard and Reserve components face while training for unit readiness and maintaining individual and collective competence. Our guests provide us with a unique perspective on how they tackle this challenge given limited time and mounting requirements the Guard and Reserve forces operate in. We also will look at efforts between the active duty and reserve/national guard forces to train and share resources and what implications that will have for our future Army. This series is just as important for any active duty leader as it is for a Guard or Reserve leader. With an increase, and need, for a more agile and innovative force that can provide a flexible response, the management and utilization of resources is key for successful execution.

In this episode we feature our first interview with members of the Army National Guard/Reserve and explore the total Army Concept. In this first episode of a two part series, we discuss the challenges that Guard units face with conducting training on a condensed timeline and in a resource constrained environment.
We also discuss the unique challenges of serving as a commander in the Army National Guard in which you’re never really “off duty” even though ARNG units drill only one weekend a month. Lastly, we talk about the unique dynamic of Family Readiness Groups in the ARNG.

In this episode we explore the tactical level of leadership by discussing the art and science of writing Platoon level Operations Orders with 1LT Luke Hutchison, a current Platoon Leader with the 4th Infantry Division. In a unique opportunity to tap into the experience of our Senior Non-commissioned Officers, this episode of the Leaders Huddle Podcast includes Sergeant First Class Harlan Kefalas. SFC Kefalas has been a listener of the podcast and has devoted much of his time and efforts to the practice of leader development, both in self practice and writing.
