During a time when Richmond, Va. is in poli-cultural transition as it pertains to renaming schools (J.E.B. Stuart Elementary to Barack Obama Elementary) and the discussion of removing Civil War hero statues, it has made a lasting decision - to rename the Boulevard to Arthur Ashe Boulevard. The Virginia Museum of History & Culture (VMHC), in partnership with the City of Richmond, Arthur Ashe Boulevard Initiative, and the Commonwealth of Virginia, co-hosted this official dedication ceremony which included such noted speakers as Civil Rights legend Congressman John Lewis (GA-05).
Virginia’s native son Arthur Ashe was honored today with a well-deserved event. The dedication ceremony was timed at the opening of the Virginia Museum of History and Culture's new exhibit "Determined: The 400 struggle for Black Equality” in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in British North America.
For those of you who could not attend - here are portions of the event for your treasure!
