YOUR MONEY HAS A CHAIN OF CUSTODY! DO YOU KNOW WHERE IT CAME FROM? Does it matter to you as a leader?

In Congo and other similar places around the world, exports are highly scrutinized. In some cases it is illegal to export certain things like illicit drugs or banned substances. In other cases there is nothing illegal or illicit about the commodity, like diamonds, cobalt, avocados or cocoa but the process of harvesting them.

As leaders we must understand the difference because we can unwittingly be supporters of very bad, criminal behavior. Violent or even murderous acts have been carried out to harvest and export certain commodities. There are international laws and process rules in place to curtail this behavior but it continues none the less.

How about in your organization? Are there processes and systems in your team which are not as clean, pure and above board as they could be? Are there “grey areas” where the ambiguity of the rules play to the favor of the most successful seller or the most popular employee? Are there different rules for different ranking employees? Do these systems of ambiguity allow for mild forms of abuse of the system and potentially of others?

It’s one thing to guard your brand by protecting the quality standards of the product or service you offer the public (your commodity) its another level of leadership to guard the integrity of the system and the process. They “chain of custody” is equally important.

Who knew food could be a leadership tool for manipulation?

From the makers of “human food” who copyright and trademark the process to the impact of giant food mills on the quality of the food we have a global consumerism problem with food.

In many places on earth they are called “subsistence farmers”. Generally meaning, the grow food because they must in order to survive. Put another way, they live off of the land they live on. They are close to nature and close to the earth. They grow food for life rather than food for economic engine.

From the ways in which we grow, harvest, manage, manipulate food supply to the ways we consume it, we have created an unhealthy ecosystem. Fast food, loud noises, bright lights, fast pace and little human interaction all feed into the problem and the profit.

As leaders, we should be more intentional about the hurried relationships our team culture creates around food and nutrition. If you desire for your team to be mentally sharp, with life longevity and true prosperity, they must have time to rest and relax as they eat. A 20 minute lunch break is not only unproductive or it is truly counter productive.

DIGITAL NATION BUILDING. A NEW NORM IN LEADERSHIP?

WHICH PEOPLE GROUP REPRESENTS 2.5 BILLION PEOPLE, HAS ITS OWN GOVERNANCE WITHOUT ELECTIONS AND ITS OWN GLOBAL CURRENCY?

What is the impact on leadership thinking when the models of oversight, administration, nation building and national alliances are all turned on their ear?

How do we model going forward when every political system of the past 100 years is being silently sidelined in the shadow of consumerism?

Regardless the world view and political leanings, wanna be kings of small nations, rising dictators, drug lords and benefactors with great intent all share one practice.

They GIVE TO THE COMMUNITY to buy favor, security and the will of the people. Then they build large secure compounds and lock themselves inside so they don’t have to live by the same rules.

Leaders must understand the power of influence is not the same as the manipulation of the people. The ability to build trust, gain relationships and create buy in is not about heavy handed practices it’s about genuinely caring for people.

THE WORDS YOU USE ARE THE WORDS YOU CHOOSE ARE THE THOUGHTS YOU THINK - TOGETHER THEY DESCRIBE AND DEFINE YOUR LIFE. It’s a loop my friends. A loop.

I suggest you get a serious grip on the conversations going on around your dinner table, with your friends over coffee or at work. Those conversations do two very important things.

1. They inform your mind on what is truth (whether it is or not). If you hear it often enough you believe it. Every time you repeat it, you deepen that belief. As you speak it and believe it it seems more and more true.

2. What your mind believes it acts in and causes it to become true in your life. EXAMPLE - an addict truly believes they will die without another “hit” of their addiction. Result is their body reacts by shutting down and operating incorrectly until the hit or fix arrives. TRUTH - fighting through this bodily deception is called withdrawal or DT. When the body has been made to submit, the perceived need subsided and eventually the craving too.

Your leadership conversations have incredible power to release strength in others or paralyze then for life. The conversation is in your control. The impact is significant.

Leaders must choose their words, their beliefs and their conversations carefully.

WHAT IS SOCIAL JUSTICE?

Social Justice has a definition and a purpose. It has an agenda, a plan and a political will of its own. The idea has been around since 1920 in Italy. Then it resurfaced again in German, then Russia, now it is making another run at dominance in the USA and is driven mostly by the UN. 

THE MIND MATTERS. GARBAGE IN GARBAGE OUT.

TO WHOM DO YOU LEND YOUR VOICE?  

 If you have worked hard to build a reputation as a credible and integrity driven leader, one wrong alliance or friendship can sink your efforts.

Think of all the TV dramas where the confidential informant turns out to be feeding bad information to the police because they fear the bad guys more. Or think of all the times the undercover law enforcement actor is being watched suspiciously by the “bad guys.”

Most leaders don’t intentionally associate with such nefarious actors, but sometimes we forget the reputation of our friends can reflect on us. Guilt by association anyone?

In elementary school all the people with “coodies” would be avoided. This invisible plague could ruin your life if you got too close to someone who was ?infected?

In today’s social media world, that contagion can be as simple as a friends list. Perhaps someone you worked with years ago or someone you went to school with back in the dark ages but have seen in decades.

You accept a simple friend request because you remember the name and face from drama class and the next thing you know you a witness before Congress for a trial that didn’t happen four decades ago.

Guilt by association.

Now you must decide: To whom do I lend my voice? Whose side am I really on? Do I take this opportunity to support my long lost friend and rise all the reputation I have worked so hard to earn? Do I remain silent and simply but truthfully say, I DON’T KNOW.

Leaders need to have made that Core Values decision before the moment arises. If there ever is a moment like this five years from now, NOW is the time to decide how you will handle it. Not then.

LEADERS MUST BALANCE DISCRETION WITH AUTHENTIC TRANSPARENCY.

When you realize the magnitude of what you know you suddenly tremble with fear at the thought of what someone else, anyone else can know about you.

Last night I heard a poignant phrase on a TV drama I am found of called “Seal Team”. I know the show is made up and most of what happens is over aggrandized but this statement rings so true it must be considered by leaders of all levels.

“You cannot connect the dots you don’t have.”

In this particular scenario the team was in a hot spot because of significant piece of missing information. Their intel officer took the blame on herself and her commander offered her solace with the previous comment.

Ask yourself this: if a 15 year old can hack the digital life of another teen and cause SWAT to be called to their home, how vulnerable are you?

Do you create enough DOTS for your own undoing? Do you leave business and mission critical information in a place where unscrupulous people might gain access? Do you serve your clients in a way to make them vulnerable?

In this day of digital information way too many bits of information are at risk of “hijack” and discretion is a must.

Yet, even still, being elusive and coy with your team could cost you the trust of those closest to you.

BALANCE is key. As a leader you must know, who needs to know. You must also know what no one needs to know and you must MIND THE DOTS!!
