Managing Up: How Next-Gen Leaders Earn Boardroom Trust

Young leaders often struggle to communicate up the chain of command, mistaking transparency for a license to vent or overshare. There is a fine line between proper professionalism or protocol and lazy status quo. There is a needed balance between permission to speak freely and realizing that idea NEW TO YOU may not be a new idea at all. Respect goes a long way and is best earned not demanded - on both sides. 

The thing to remember on your way up the ladder is this: whoever got there first holds significant influence over your outcome. Keep that in mind before sawing the legs off the ladder you’re climbing. 

Mentor Lens: Provide an execution blueprint for young executives on how to present solutions instead of problems, speak in the terms of stakeholder interests, and handle peer conflict directly.

Being transparent, vulnerable and authentic about moments of trial you have lived through can shorten the learning curve, increase productivity, create a larger profit margin and reduce turnover.

2021 Brought a new era of work environment. The remote worker phase was born during the pandemic and many companies sent their teams home to try to keep the business running at full capacity. As the world slowly returned to a sense of normalcy, not everyone came back to the office or workplace. In fact, in manny markets commercial real estate took a hard hit as companies realized they could save millions by not leasing space for work. Team members saved commute time and fuel costs plus technology allowed them to remain engaged and productive. Or did it? Team management has permanently evolved into a "phygital" challenge—requiring leaders to bridge the space between physical front rows and remote screens. This is a leadership issue, a communication challenge and an accountability puzzle all rolled into one.
