Career strategist, leadership coach, and friend Ashley Morgan joins me on this week's episode of Leading With Your Gut. After spending nearly 17 years mastering the corporate America game and dabbling for two years in a side hustle, Ashley recently transitioned into entrepreneurship.

Ashley's mission is to disrupt the power dynamics within corporate organizations. She does this by helping women get the pay raises and promotions they deserve. Ashley feels called to help women, particularly Black women elevate their financial situations and shift the power dynamics in the workplace. Ashley believes that when this happens, the ripple effect is massive and played out in the world, in families, and communities.

In this week's episode, Ashley shares experiences as a Black woman navigating through her career in predominantly white spaces.  She and I discuss America being in a great awakening and social revolution, racism, and systems of racial oppression.

Welcome back to another solo episode of Leading With Your Gut. In this episode, I share some insights into my family tree, particularly on my dad's side. For this episode, I wanted to use this space to amplify my grandmother's voice. My grandma, Betty Collins Shellman was a generous, loving, and musically talented woman. She died when I was a teenager, but I still remember her presence. Grandma Betty was a lifelong activist; always attending protests in Seattle, promoting equity for all, and staying on the right side of history. Her voice, like many other Black women, need to be heard and shared.

In the 1980s my grandmother, Betty Shellman, wrote a piece in Seven Stars & Orion by Ester Hall Mumford. Grandma Betty related her memories of growing up east of the Cascades in Wenatchee, coming to Seattle, and what life was like for her and for the people she knew during the Great Depression. On this week's episode, I narrate her story. I hope that you enjoy it.

Welcome back to another unedited episode of Leading With Your Gut. This is the third week now that I just speak from my heart while stumbling over some of my words. Today is an important day (June 15, 2020) because the Supreme Court has ruled that discrimination against LGBTQ individuals at work is illegal under the Civil Rights Act.

In this week's episode, I share my ongoing revolution as a Black woman, monumental events that have occurred in the last 10 years or so, and some lessons learned. I also discuss a few of my memories of racial discrimination that I repressed or forgot about up until recently.

My childhood friend Shalanee Joyner joins me this week on Leading With Your Gut. In this episode, Shalanee and I discuss what it was like growing up amongst mostly predominately White people. Shalanee is a 34-year old light-skinned Black woman who grew up feeling like a chameleon; blending in mostly with Whiteness or White culture because it was easier. I'm a biracial Black woman who grew up never feeling good enough in either White or Black communities, but like Shalanee assimilated to mostly Whiteness because it was easier.

Shalanee and I share similar stories, experiences, and reflect upon the following:
-recognizing when we became aware of our racial differences as kids
-growing up in a predominately White neighborhood, going to White Schools, and having mostly White friends
-discriminatory and racists remarks against us
-privileges in favor and against us
-the importance of this movement and our hope that it's not just a trend
-how we can amplify our voice and our experiences
-the importance of Black voices
-how this is an issue of race, however until all marginalized groups are free, no one is free

The first time I met Cha, I was mesmerized by her uniqueness, authenticity, and the fact that she is multi-talented. To me, Cha is the epitome of someone who fully embraces their  “right-brain” in every facet of their life. This week on Leading With Your Gut my guest Texas shares an incredible story of survival. After a car accident in his twenties, Texas became addicted to opioids and later switched to heroin. During this time Texas was married to an incredible man (Tom) who he tried to hide his addiction from. 

In this episode, Texas and I get real. Texas is open, vulnerable, and reflective of his life. We discuss relationships, gay marriage, being gay in a conservative state, family, mistakes, love, and intuition. Texas discusses how he followed his gut and had the courage to come clean to his ex-husband. Years later, Texas has a new life and is drug-free. His biggest piece of advice? Until you love yourself, nothing matters.

Since his undergraduate days at Georgetown, J-L balanced studying and working as a lawyer while mastering his comedy skills at night.
