In this episode of the ‘Making It Count’ podcast, we sit down with Karen Eley, founder of ‘Women Talking Finance’, a service which provides money coaching and financial literacy services specifically to women. Today we dive deep into the psychology behind how we treat money and why we do what we do in this space.
She was raised by a single mum who told Karen that ‘a man is not a financial plan,’ an ethos she adopted from an early age. After many years working in the auditing and technical services space, Karen took a leap of faith and in 2019 started her own financial coaching service ‘Women Talking Finance.’ ‘I wanted to work with clients to unpack the psychology behind how we handle our finances so they could make long-lasting and sustainable changes for the better in how they manage their money’ says Karen.
‘Men and women often come from different backgrounds when it comes to values or how we should approach the money we spend’ explains Karen, ‘There are two sides to managing money – the external side and the internal side’. Karen has seen vast difference between how women in their 20s approach their finances compared with women in their 40s. ‘Women have everything they need to be really good investors; they just need to apply the same strategy to an investment portfolio and go from consumers to investors.’
Money is intertwined in all we do as humans. ‘Money stress can impact our health and even relationships.’ So, with that in mind we ask Karen for her top three tips for long term financial goals. First, we need to make financial goals with purpose and direction. Secondly, build your knowledge around your finances and finally, and most importantly, ‘become really clear on what money means to you – reflect on your childhood associations with money - because as children we are conditioned around what we think, feel and how we act with money.’
So, sit back and enjoy this episode with as Karen Eley Makes It Count when it comes to managing our finances.

In this episode of the ‘Making It Count’ podcast, we sit down with Sonia Bestulic, a Multi-Award nominated Author, Founding Director of Talking Heads Speech Pathology, Podcaster of Chatabout Children with Sonia Bestulic, and highly regarded Speaker.
As a child, Sonia loved helping people and the older she got the greater this desire within her grew. All of her passion accumulated until she became a speech pathologist and opened her own clinic in Sydney. With the mothers Sonia worked with, she saw that although there were strength and determination, mums are exhausted. ‘I could see that they weren’t including themselves on their list of people to nurture and take care of’ says Sonia. She realised that by supporting mothers – we can support the children in a much more elevated way. ‘I wanted them to know -You matter too’. So, Sonia wrote her third book – ‘Flourish for Mums - 21 ways to thrive with self-care and acceptance.’
Sonia gives us a sneak peek and reveals some her top tips to thrive with self-care. Tip number one - ‘Honour your human-ness – let go of all the high expectations and perfectionism and focus on what matters.’ Sonia goes on to explain the ‘compare and contrast button’ in our brains and how we can interrupt negative thinking with thankfulness. Also, we need to get up and dance! ‘Dance is an awesome re-connection tool - it brings you in a zone of presence.’
We switch gears and talk all things social media. ‘I think sometimes we forget we're in control of it’ says Sonia, ‘You need to make sure you are making it work for you and ask - what is the purpose of me being on social media?’ then take a moment to ask yourself how you are feeling after you get off social media.
And finally, we hear how Sonia takes time to reconnect with herself as a working mum of 3 and her ‘to-do’ and ‘to-be' list.
So, sit back and enjoy this episode with Sonia Bestulic as she Makes It Count.

In this episode of the ‘Making It Count’ podcast, we sit down with founder of Powerful Steps, Tory Archbold.
Tory founded the globally recognised PR agency ‘Torstar’ and was at the top of her game working with influencers like Megan Gale, Zara, Nespresso, Victoria’s Secret and Steve Madden. However, for three years each time she did a launch ‘a little bit of my heart was saying-this is the last time you will do this Tory.’ Sitting at the launch of Drew Barrymore’s ‘Flower Beauty’ listening to her speak about surviving tough times, Tory had her ‘ah-ha’ moment and thought ‘lady, I see you and raise you five. You know what, I’m done.’ And she was – she stepped away from PR to get her life back.
Tory had her own story to tell. ‘I wanted a life with more purpose’ says Tory ‘It was time to reshape my story and step into my power zone.’ So, took some time out to re-evaluate and using her forward momentum, founded Powerful Steps in 2019 – A platform to inspire, encourage and empower others to step outside their comfort zone and into their power zone.
‘My values are passion, integrity and delivery – my success is your success’ says Tory. After a near-death experience and ten years of being stalked, Tory gained a fresh perspective. She took the bravest step of all and publicly revealed her personal mask. ‘There is power in connection. I wanted to be a better version of myself to teach others that challenges can become possibilities.’ Julie met Tory through her ‘Business Attraction Program’ where she has been able to develop relationships with other value-aligned female entrepreneurs.
A big part of why Tory is so successful is the power of her brand and how she can attract value-sharing people to that brand. She shares with us the key to having a successful and powerful personal brand to ensure it attracts what you want - ‘When you connect with someone, the first thing they will do is google you – so invest in some good imagery for LinkedIn’, and secondly ‘work on the first three sentences of your bio and understand your 5-point story’. It's all about investing in your own story, understanding the power of that story and translating that into a powerful communication tool so that people want to connect with you. ‘You need to believe in yourself and the power if your story’ say Tory ‘the most successful leaders are uncomfortable to be able to step into a higher vibration.’
‘A happy heart is a magnet for miracles’ say Tory, ‘my life is now in alignment and I am happy’. So, strip out what doesn’t serve you and make yourself available to the things that serve you and your value set.
