Using a Smartphone
Apps, settings, data plans, and staying safe online
A smartphone is one of the most useful tools you can have as a newcomer. It helps you navigate, translate, communicate, find jobs, access healthcare, and manage your daily life — all from one device. Understanding the basics will help you get the most out of it safely.
The first decision is choosing a phone plan. Prepaid plans require no credit check and no annual contract — you pay monthly and can cancel anytime. Postpaid plans (with a contract) often include newer phones at a lower upfront cost but require a credit check and a 12 to 24-month commitment. For most newcomers, prepaid is the safest starting point.
Major carriers include T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon. There are also budget carriers — such as Mint Mobile, Cricket, and Metro by T-Mobile — that use the same networks at significantly lower prices.
Learn to connect to Wi-Fi whenever you are at home, at work, or at the library. Using Wi-Fi for streaming, video calls, and browsing saves your mobile data for when you need it on the go.
Protect your phone and your accounts. Set a PIN or fingerprint lock on your screen. Use different passwords for different apps. Never share your password or Social Security Number by text or email — legitimate companies never ask for these by message.
Be alert to scams. If you receive a text or email saying you won something, owe a fine, or need to verify your bank account, do not click any links. Scammers often impersonate the IRS, Social Security Administration, or your bank. When in doubt, call the company directly using the number on their official website.

Calling 911 is a critical survival skill in the United States. The 911 system connects you to emergency services — police, fire department, or medical help — in seconds. Knowing how to use it correctly can save a life, including your own.
Call 911 immediately for any situation that is life-threatening or in progress: a fire, a medical emergency such as a heart attack or serious injury, a violent crime, a car accident with injuries, or a missing child. For non-urgent situations — such as a stolen bicycle, a noise complaint, or a minor fender bender with no injuries — call your local police non-emergency number instead.
When a dispatcher answers, stay calm and speak clearly. The first thing to say is your location — the street address and any helpful details like "second floor" or "near the park." The dispatcher will ask questions to understand the situation and can send help while you are still talking.
You do not need to speak English to call 911. Simply say the name of your language — for example, "Spanish" or "Mandarin" — and the dispatcher will connect you with a free telephone interpreter within seconds. This service is available 24 hours a day.
You will never be in trouble for calling 911 for a genuine emergency, regardless of your immigration status. Emergency services do not ask about citizenship when responding to emergencies. This is true across all 50 states.
After the emergency, you may be asked to give a statement to police. You have the right to have an interpreter present. You will also receive an incident report number, which you can use if you need to follow up on the situation later.

The pharmacy is an important part of the American healthcare system. Whether you are picking up a prescription from your doctor or buying an over-the-counter medicine, knowing how to interact with a pharmacist will help you stay healthy and save money.
When your doctor gives you a prescription, you can take it to any licensed pharmacy. Major chains include CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, and Walmart Pharmacy. Many grocery stores like Kroger and Safeway also have pharmacies. When you arrive, give the prescription to the pharmacist along with your insurance card and a photo ID.
Always ask whether a generic version is available. Generic medications contain the same active ingredients as brand-name drugs and are approved by the FDA to be just as effective. They are almost always cheaper — sometimes by 50% or more. Your pharmacist is legally required to tell you if a generic is available.
Read the label on your medication carefully before taking it. It will tell you the dosage (how much to take), how often to take it, and any special instructions such as "take with food" or "avoid sunlight." If the label is difficult to understand, ask the pharmacist to explain it in simpler terms.
Pharmacists are highly trained and can answer questions about your medications at no cost. Do not hesitate to ask about side effects, drug interactions (reactions between two medications), and whether a medication is safe to take during pregnancy or with a specific health condition.
Many pharmacies offer automatic refills so you never run out of medication. You can also request to have all your medications synchronized so they all run out on the same day — this means only one trip to the pharmacy each month.

The United States Postal Service (USPS) offers a wide range of services beyond simply mailing letters. As a newcomer, learning what the post office can do for you will save you time and money.
The most common service is regular first-class mail for letters and small envelopes. A standard letter costs 68 cents to mail anywhere in the United States. If your envelope is larger or heavier than one ounce, you will need extra postage.
For packages and gifts, the USPS offers several shipping options. Priority Mail delivers in 1 to 3 business days and includes free tracking. Priority Mail flat rate boxes allow you to ship anything that fits for one fixed price — great for heavier items. For less urgent packages, First Class Package Service and Parcel Select are cheaper but slower.
Certified mail is essential when you need proof that an important document was sent and received. It is commonly used for legal notices, lease agreements, job applications, and court documents. For extra proof, add a return receipt service, which sends you a postcard signed by the recipient.
Money orders are a safe way to pay when you do not have a bank account or when a business does not accept personal checks. USPS money orders cost $1.65 for amounts up to $1,000 and are accepted almost everywhere in the United States.
If you need to send a package internationally, you will need to fill out a customs form declaring the contents and their value. Different countries have rules about what can be imported, so ask the postal clerk if you are unsure.
The post office is typically open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM, and on Saturdays until noon. You can also print shipping labels, purchase postage, and track packages at usps.com.

When you rent or own a home in the United States, you will be responsible for paying utility bills. Common utilities include electricity, gas, water, and internet service. Understanding how to read and pay these bills will help you avoid late fees and service interruptions.
When you move into a new home, you will need to set up accounts with the utility companies that serve your area. Your landlord can tell you which companies provide electricity, gas, and water in your building. For internet service, you can choose from different providers and plans.
Each month, you will receive a bill showing your usage, the amount owed, and the due date. Pay close attention to the due date — paying late usually results in a fee of $5 to $25. If you receive a disconnect notice, do not ignore it. Call the company immediately, as most will offer a payment extension or payment plan.
Setting up auto-pay is highly recommended. With auto-pay, the payment is automatically deducted from your bank account on the due date. This eliminates the risk of forgetting to pay. You can usually set up auto-pay on the utility company's website or by calling customer service.
Budget billing is another helpful option. Instead of paying different amounts each month (higher in winter for heat, higher in summer for air conditioning), budget billing averages your usage over the year and charges you the same amount each month. This makes planning your monthly budget easier.
If you are having financial difficulty, contact the utility company before your bill becomes past due. Most utilities have assistance programs for customers who are struggling to pay. You may also qualify for government energy assistance programs such as LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program).
