Елиас Канети

Елиас Канети получава Нобеловата награда за литература през 1981 г. Той е социолог, есеист, белетрист и драматург. Въпреки че е роден в България, пише на немски език. Elias Canetti

Elias Canetti received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1981. He was a sociologist, essayist, novel author, and playwright. Although he was born in Bulgaria, he wrote in German. His family was Jewish, and his ancestors had been kicked out of Spain centuries ago. His father was a wealthy merchant, and his mother's lineage came from the founding family of the Jewish colony in Ruse, where his ancestors settled after being expelled from the country of Spain.

Canetti was born in 1905, and in 1911 they moved from the town of Ruse to the United Kingdom. His father died the following year, and his mother moved them to Vienna, insisting then that they adopt the German language. By this time, Canetti already spoke his native tongue of Ladino, English, and Bulgarian fluently. He also was able to speak a little bit of French. The family moved around during his childhood, but in 1924 Canetti himself went back to Vienna so that he could begin to study chemistry. While at the university however, he discovered that his interests were more in the realm of literature and philosophy. He did earn his degree in chemistry, but he never actually got a position as a chemist.

When he started to write, he used his words as a political tool to express his leftist views. He was at the July Revolt of 1927 and saw people burning books. Canetti's most well-known work was Crowds and Power, which was published in 1960 and won him the Nobel Prize. His inspiration for the story was the day the Palace on Justice was burned during the July Revolt.
