Mnozí Češi považují Bohumila Hrabala za jednoho z nejlepších spisovatelů 20. století.

Narodil se v roce 1914 v Brně.

Jeho matka byla svobodná, ale mnozí věří, že jeho otcem byl Bohumil Blecha.

Ten by o rok starší než Hrabalova matka Marie Božena Kyliánová a byl to její kamarád ze sousedství.

Hrabal bydlel až do svých tří let s prarodiči. Jeho matka pracovala v pivovaru v jiném městu s Františkem Hrabalem, za kterého se vdala a uvedla ho jako Bohumilova kmotra.

Po svatbě se rodina přestěhovala do malého města Nymburku a František se stal manažerem pivovaru.

Hrabal měl v raném věku potíže ve škole. V první třídě gymnázia propadl a poté přešel na technickou školu, kde jeho obtíže se studiem pokračovaly.

Nakonec absolvoval s certifikátem uvádějícím, že se může zapsat na technický kurz na univerzitě.

Začal studovat latinu a práva. Odpromoval až rok po válce, protože university byly mezitím zavřeny.

Poté pracoval v řadě zaměstnání, od dělníka v ocelárně Kladno až po pojišťovacího agenta.

Byla to všechna tato zaměstnání, která okolo této doby inspirovala jeho psaní.

Hrabal publikoval své první dílo až v roce 1948. Byla to sbírka básní.

Tato sbírka byla stažena z oběhu poté, co byl v Československu ustanoven komunistický režim.

Bylo mu znovu zakázáno publikovat poté, co Československo napadla vojska Varšavského paktu.

V roce 1970 byly znovu dvě jeho knihy zakázány předtím, než byly distribuovány.

V roce 1975 konečně jeho interview v českém časopise Tvorba představilo jeho dílo veřejnosti.

Některé disidenty jeho díla rozzuřila a spálili jeho knihy.

V tu dobu byla většina jeho děl dostupných pouze v undergroundových edicích v zahraničí.

Many Czechs consider Bohumil Hrabal to be one of the 20th century's best writers.

He was born in Brno in 1914.

His mother was unmarried, and most believe his father was Bohumil Blecha.

He was a year older than Hrabal's mother Marie Bozena Kilianova and was a friend in her neighborhood.

Hrabal resided with his grandparents until he was three years old, and his mother worked in another town at a brewery with Frantisek Hrabal, who she married and listed as Bohumil's godfather.

After they married, the family moved to the small town of Nymburk, and Frantisek became manager at the brewery.

Hrabel had a difficult time in his early years at school, failing the first year in grammar school and then going on to a technical school where he also continued to struggle with his studies.

Finally he graduated with a certificate which said he could enroll in a technical course at a university.

He went on to study Latin and then law, not graduating until after the war was over because the universities were shut down.

Then he held a series of jobs including everything from a manual laborer at the Kladno steelworks to an insurance agent.

It was all of these jobs which inspired his writings around this time.

Hrabel didn't publish his first work until 1948, which was a poetry collection.

The collection was removed from circulation when the Communist regime was set up in Czechoslovakia.

He was banned from publishing again after troops invaded Czechoslovakia after the Warsaw Pact.

Again in 1970, two of his books were banned before they were distributed.

Finally in 1975, his interview in Tvorba, a Czech publication, launched his work into the public eye.

Some dissidents were angered by his work and burned his books.

At this point most of his work is only available in underground editions abroad.

Stromy, tráva a keře, to všechno jsou rostliny.

Je mnoho druhů rostlin.

Rostliny mohou být malé nebo velké.

Mohou mít široké nebo tenké listy.

Většina rostlin získává živiny.

Získává je ze vzduchu, vody a slunečních paprsků.

Pomáhají jim v tom živiny obsažené v zemi.

Pomáhá také zeleň v listech!

Rostliny rostou na většině míst světa.

Rostliny jsou tvarem a velikostí uzpůsobeny místům, kde rostou.

Různé druhy listů jim pomáhají na těchto místech lépe přežít.

RŮZNÁ MÍSTA, RŮZNÉ LISTY

Některé rostliny rostou v tropických lesích.

Tyto rostliny mají většinou velké, široké listy.

Listy jsou velké, aby zachytily hodně slunečního svitu.

V tropických lesích hodně prší.

Některé rostliny mají listy se ostrými špičkami.

Déšť ze špiček rychle steče.

Tak rostliny nejsou příliš mokré.

Některé rostliny rostou v horké poušti.

Pouště jsou velmi suchá místa skoro beze srážek.

Kde má listy tato rostlina?

Na okraji listů jsou ostré ostny!

Ostny pomáhají pouštním rostlinám udržet vodu.

Hodně rostlin v horké poušti má tlusté listy.

Také tlusté listy pomáhají pouštním rostlinám uchovávat vodu.

Některé rostliny rostou ve studených lesích.

Hodně stromů ve studených lesích má tenké listy.

Tyto listy se nazývají jehličí.

Jehličí v zimě pomáhá těmto stromům udržet teplo.

Jehličí je užitečné také z jiného důvodu.

Sníh z jehlic rychle spadne.

Potom nejsou větve tak těžké a nelámou se.

PODIVNÉ LISTY

Některé rostliny rostou v neúrodné půdě.

Nemohou získat dostatek živin.

Půda jim nedává vše, co potřebují.

Listy některých rostlin jsou pasti.

Používají své pasti k chytání malých živočichů.

Jako potravu si chytají hmyz.

Mohou dokonce chytat malé žáby!

MANY KINDS OF PLANTS

There are many different kinds of plants.

Plants can be big or small.

They make food from air, water, and sunlight.

Things in the soil also help them make food.

The green in their leaves helps, too!

Plants grow in most places around the world.

Plants are the right shape and size for the places where they grow.

Different kinds of leaves help plants live in these places.

DIFFERENT PLACES, DIFFERENT LEAVES

Some plants grow in hot forests.

Many of these plants have big, wide leaves.

The leaves are big to take in lots of sunlight.

Hot forests get a lot of rain.

Some plants have leaves with pointed tips.

Rain runs off the tips very fast.

Then the plants do not get too wet.

Some plants grow in hot deserts.

Deserts are very dry places without much rain.

Where are the leaves on this plant?

The sharp spines are the plant’s leaves!

Spines help desert plants save water.

Many other plants in hot deserts have thick leaves.

Thick leaves help desert plants save water, too.

Some plants grow in cold forests.

Many trees in cold forests have thin leaves.

The leaves are called needles.

Needles help these trees stay warm in winter.

The needles help in another way, too.

Snow falls off the needles fast.

Then the branches do not get heavy and break.

STRANGE LEAVES

Some plants grow in poor soil.

They cannot make enough food.

The soil does not give them everything they need.

The leaves of some plants are traps.

These plants use their traps to catch small animals.

They catch insects to eat.

They may even catch small frogs!

Den upálení mistra Jana Husa připadá na 6. července, kdy byl Hus upálen za kacířství poté, co odmítl odvolat své názory.

Den upálení mistra Jana Husa je v České republice státním svátkem.

Hus byl český kněz, který žil ve 14. a 15. století.

Mnozí ho považovali za prvního reformátora církve po Janu Viklefovi, který zemřel v roce 1384 a byl později prohlášen za kacíře.

Během svého života šířil Hus Viklefovo psaní. Viklef byl známý jako teoretik církevní reformace.

Římská katolická církev nazvala Husa kacířem za jeho názory o naukách učených Viklefem, zejména eucharistii a eklesiologii.

V roce 1409 ho církev vyloučila poté, co strávil roky kázáním proti tomu, co uváděl jako morální úpadek církve v tehdejší době.

Jeho vyloučení přišlo poté, co Alexandr V. vydal papežskou bulu, která umožnila arcibiskupovi vyloučit ty, kteří následovali Viklefovo učení, včetně Husa.

Jan Hus Day falls on July 6, the day he was burned at the stake for heresy after refusing to recant his beliefs.

In the Czech Republic, Jan Hus Day is a public holiday.

Hus was a Czech priest who lived in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Many considered him to be the first church reformer after John Wycliffe, who died in 1384 and was later declared to be a heretic.

During Hus's life, he circulated the writings of Wycliffe, who is known as the theorist of ecclesiastical Reformation.

The Roman Catholic Church named Hus a heretic for his belief of the doctrines taught by Wycliffe, particularly the Eucharist and ecclesiology.

The church excommunicated him in 1409 after he had spent years preaching against what he said were the moral failings of the church at that time.

His excommunication came after a papal bull issued by Alexander V enabled the Archbishop to move against those who followed the teachings of Wycliffe, including Hus.

He was condemned by the church on July 6, 1415, about a month after his trial on charges of heresy.

Legends say that when the executioners attempted to light the fire that would burn Hus to death, they had some problems building it up.

An older woman approached the fire and tossed a small bit of wood upon it, and Hus was said to have called out, "Sancta Simplicitas!" which means, "Holy Simplicity!" Today the Czechs still use this phrase to say that a particular action is stupid.

Hus's martyrdom kicked off the Hussite Wars, which were a series of five papal crusades as his followers rebelled against the Roman Catholic Church.
