Sankthansaften fejres den 23. juni i Danmark.
Den følgende dag markerer festmåltidet for Johannes Døberen.
Ifølge Bibelen i Lukas evangeliet 1;36, blev Johannes Døberen født seks måneder før Jesus.
Derfor er hans fødsel fejret den 24. juni, seks måneder før jul.
Ud over at fejre fødslen af Johannes Døberen, fejrer Sankthans også solhverv den længste dag i året.
Et vigtigt element i fejringen af Sankthansaften er ild.
Ilden er et tegn på påskønnelse for en god høst.
I middelalderen ville de ældste i samfundet samles på Sankthansaften og samle og kompilere urteblandinger, som de så ville bruge i løbet af året til at behandle de syge.
I dag fejrer folk i Danmark dagen ved at spise et middagsmåltid med venner og familie.
Efter middagen samles de rundt om et bål.
Bålet holdes ofte på offentlige pladser.
Før bålet tændes, holdes der Sankt Hans taler.
Talerne holdes ofte af vigtige personer i samfundet.
Kl. 22 tændes bålet, og folk fejrer det ved at indtage alkoholholdige drikke, danse og snakke mens man observerer bålet.
Desuden brænder man en heks på bålet.
Heksen er en dukke, der ofte er lavet af børn i lokal samfundet.
Den er klædt i gamle klæder, der er fyldt med hø, og har ofte et ondt udseende.
Ifølge traditionen er der onde kræfter på spil på Sankthansaften.
Antændelsen af bålet hjælper med at afskrække de onde kræfter.

According to the Bible in Luke 1:36, John the Baptist was born six months before Jesus.

In addition to commemorating the birth of St. John the Baptist, St. John's Eve celebrates the June solstice.
An important element of celebrating St. John's Eve is fire.
The fire is a sign of appreciation for a bountiful harvest.
During medieval times, the elders of the community would gather on St. John's Eve and compile herbs that they would use throughout the year to treat the ill.
Today, people in Denmark celebrate by sharing the dinner meal with friends and family.
After the dinner, they attend a bonfire.
The bonfire is often held in a public place.
Before the bonfire is lit, a speeches are made.
The speech is often given by an important person from the community.
At 10 p.m., the bonfire is lit, and people celebrate by imbibing alcoholic beverages, dancing, and fraternizing.
During the bonfire, there is the burning of a witch.
The witch is a doll, which is often crafted by children in the local community.
It is attired in old garments that are stuffed with hay, and often has an evil appearance.
According to tradition, there are evil forces at play on St. John's Eve.
Lighting the bonfire on is meant to help deter the evil forces.
