Thorvald Stauning was Denmark’s first social democratic prime minister.
He served between 1924 and 1926 and then again in 1929 until he died in 1942.
It was under his leadership that Denmark became a social welfare state, and although many of his initiatives did not happen in his lifetime because of things that were out of his control, he is considered to be one of Denmark’s most admired 20th century statesmen because he led the nation through some of its most troubled years.
Some suggest that it was his leadership and coalition cabinet which kept the fascist and communist movements which swept Europe from getting a strong foothold in Denmark.
Stauning started out working as a cigar sorter and soon became involved with trade unions.
Between 1896 and 1908 he led the Cigar Sorters’ Union.
Between 1898 and 1904 he also edited Samarbejdet, a magazine for the Federation of Trade Unions.
He was elected to Parliament in 1906 and became the Social Democratic Party chairman in 1910.
He retained that position for almost three decades.
He became prime minister in 1924, and his minority cabinet, the Cabinet of Thorvald Stauning I, is seen as a major breakthrough cabinet in Denmark’s history because it was the first cabinet that was entirely Social Democrat.
It was also the first cabinet in which a woman received the position of Minister of Education.
At that time Nina Bang was also one of the few female ministers in the entire world.
In addition to setting new records in his cabinet, Stauning also set another record because he successfully sought re-election three times—more than any other Danish politician.
