Lisa: Nou, gewoon, aan de overgang van de basisschool naar de middelbare school. Weet jij nog hoe spannend dat was?

Lisa: En dat niveau is dan vmbo, havo of vwo. Ik wist vroeger nooit precies wat de letters betekenden.
And that level is then vmbo, havo, or vwo. I never used to know exactly what the letters stood for.

Maarten: Nee, dat leer je vanzelf. Het zijn de afkortingen voor de verschillende soorten middelbare school.

Lisa: Oh ja. En de 'brugklas' is ook zo'n typisch woord. De brug naar de rest van de school.

Lisa: En dan zeg je ook 'je voorbereiden'. Dat klinkt zo serieus. 'Ik bereid me voor op het weer'. Alsof het een gevecht is!
And then you also say 'to prepare yourself'. That sounds so serious. 'I'm preparing myself for the weather'. As if it's a fight!

Maarten: Soms is het ook een gevecht, met die wind. 'Je aankleden' is gewoon wat je elke dag doet, maar 'je voorbereiden' is met een plan.

Maarten: Oh? Wat is er gebeurd dan?

Lisa: Ik heb een uur aan de telefoon gezeten. Met de helpdesk van mijn internetprovider. Echt niet leuk.
I sat on the phone for an hour. With the helpdesk of my internet provider. Really not fun.

Maarten: Ah, de helpdesk bellen. Ja, dat is een klassieker. Vertel.

Lisa: Nou, mijn internet was super traag. Ik dacht dat er misschien een storing was in de wijk.

Lisa: Ja, prima! Maar ik had gisteren zoiets raars, of nou ja, raar... Ik wilde een broodje kopen bij een nieuwe bakker hier in Utrecht.
Yeah, great! But yesterday I had something so strange, or well, strange... I wanted to buy a sandwich at a new bakery here in Utrecht.

Maarten: Oh, en? Was het lekker?
Oh, and? Was it good?

Lisa: Dat weet ik dus niet! Ik had alleen contant geld bij me. En toen zag ik een bordje: 'Hier alleen pinnen'. Echt niet! Ik kon dus niks kopen.
I don't know! I only had cash with me. And then I saw a sign: 'Card payments only here'. Seriously! So I couldn't buy anything.

Maarten: Ah, ja, dat zie je steeds vaker hè. Wel jammer van je broodje.

Lisa: Ja, super irritant. Ik moest helemaal naar een andere winkel. Ik had mijn pinpas niet bij me.

Maarten: Ja, zeker. Toen ik klein was, moest ik altijd met mijn zakgeld naar de winkel. Dan telde ik de munten op de toonbank.
Yeah, definitely. When I was little, I always had to go to the shop with my pocket money. Then I'd count the coins on the counter.

Lisa: Oh ja! Dat deed ik ook. Ik wilde altijd van dat ene speciale snoep kopen en dan ging ik eerst weken sparen.
Oh yeah! I did that too. I always wanted to buy that one special candy and then I'd save for weeks first.

Maarten: En nu... als we met vrienden iets eten, stuurt er altijd wel iemand een Tikkie. Een betaalverzoek.

Lisa: Ja, dat is wel super handig. Niemand wil meer de hele rekening voorschieten en dan wachten op het geld. Vroeger moest je dan iedereen bellen.

Maarten: Dat is waar. Ik kon me vroeger niet voorstellen dat je geld kon overmaken met je telefoon. Dat leek wel iets uit een film.
That's true. I couldn't imagine back then that you could transfer money with your phone. That seemed like something out of a movie.

Lisa: Nee, precies! En dat je een foto van de rekening kon sturen en dat iedereen dan zijn deel betaalt. Dat zou mijn vader echt fantastisch gevonden hebben vroeger.
No, exactly! And that you could send a photo of the bill and then everyone pays their share. My dad would have found that absolutely fantastic back then.

Maarten: Haha, ja, geen gedoe meer met kleingeld en wie wat betaald heeft.

Lisa: Echt hè? Toch vind ik het een beetje jammer dat contant geld verdwijnt. Het voelt... echter of zo. Begrijp je wat ik bedoel?

Speaker 2: Yes, at the market and in small shops, it's often still possible. But big shops prefer not to anymore, I think. For safety.

Lisa: Ja precies! Vandaag praten we dus verder over de dokter.

Maarten: Ja, over de huisarts in Nederland. Dat is toch wel een speciaal systeem.

Lisa: Zeker. Je kan niet zomaar naar het ziekenhuis lopen. Je moet altijd eerst langs de huisarts.
