Zumbi of Palmares
During colonial times, slavery was part of Brazil's social structure. Slaves were forcefully brought from Africa to work in Brazilian plantations. Eventually, fugitive slaves started founding "settlements of resistance" called "quilombos." These communities were self-sustaining and followed a republic model in contrast to the Portuguese monarchy of the time.
"Quilombo dos Palmares," the "most famous of these republics," occupied an area close to that of Portugal and was localized where the state of Alagoas is today. Palmares was so big because it was found right on the way between the ocean and Guinea, an important African slave trade route. The last leader of quilombo dos Palmares was Zumbi.
Zumbi was born as a free man in Palmares in 1655 but was captured and given to a Portuguese missionary at age six. He was taught Portuguese and Latin and would help with the daily mass. However, despite his master's attempts to pacify him, he escaped back to his birthplace at age fifteen where he became known for his military strategies.
In 1678, the governor of the closest capitaincy offered Ganga Zumba, then the leader of Palmares, a peace treaty. All runaway slaves living in Palmares would be given their freedom if the quilombo would submit to Portuguese power. Zumba was about to accept the deal, but Zumbi didn't think it was right for Palmares to be set free while there were still other Africans enslaved. Thanks to this position, Zumbi became the new leader of Palmares.
Fifteen years after Zumbi became leader, the quilombo was invaded by the Portuguese military and he was hurt. Two years later, he was murdered together with twenty warriors. His head was salted and exposed in public to contradict popular legend of him being immortal.
