Vila Velha

Vila Velha
Six hundred million years ago, the region that is now Vila Velha was still covered by the ocean. But after two hundred million years of volcanic eruptions, mountains were formed in the region but were soon covered by glaciers
Millions of years had to pass for the glaciers to melt, but along with the water, sand and pieces of stones were also taken. And that is how nature sculpted the Vila Velha State Park and had his work completed by the rains and winds in the region. The park is located in Ponta Grossa, Parana state.
Twenty-three huge figures made of sandstone were formed, and if you use your imagination, you can see different pictures of animals, objects, and human figures such as the camel, the cup, the sphinx, the Indian, and the bride.
There are four caverns in Vila Velha, the biggest depth being 107 meters. The Golden Lagoon, also within the park, has the bottom covered with mica. That is why in the afternoon with the sun reflection, its waters became a golden color. A curious fact is that there is an underground connection of three kilometers from the lagoon and the four caverns.
Besides the architectural beauty of nature, the park is also home to many animals of the region, like the maned wolf, ocelot, the coati, the tayra, the giant anteater, and the anteater.
In former days, Indians inhabited Vila Velha, and its name was Itacueretaba, which means "extinct city of stone." There are many legends about Vila Velha. One of them says that the people that are most sensitive to the nature and to love, when they move around the sculpture in the shape of the cup, they can hear the last words of a warrior to his lover before being petrified by Tupa, "I will sleep with you."
