Türkiye’de kutlanan Gençlik ve Spor Bayramı, Atatürk’ün Türk gençliğine olan sevgisi ve umuduyla kurulmuştur.

Atatürk’ün sözleri şu şekildedir: " Ey Türk Gençliği! Birinci vazifen, Türk istiklâlini, Türk Cumhuriyeti’ni, ilelebet, muhafaza ve müdafaa etmektir. Mevcudiyetinin ve istikbalinin yegâne temeli budur. Bu temel, senin, en kıymetli hazinendir. "Türkiye’nin geleceğinin yeni neslin ellerinde olacağını düşünerek gençliğe olan sevgisini göstermiş ve onurlandırmıştır. İleri görüşlülüğüyle tanınan Atatürk’ün iyimserliği tüm halka yayılmıştır. Türkiye’yi ileriye götüren milletine olan bağlılığının kanıtı; halkına, özellikle de genç nüfusa olan tutumudur.

Gençlik ve Spor Bayramı günü, Kurtuluş Savaşı’nın başladığı tarih olarak belirlenmiştir. Atatürk, Türk halkı için egemenlik mücadelesine başlarken, ilk hamlesi gençliğe değer vermesi olmuştur. Pek çok lider ilerleyen dönemlerde geleceklerinin gençliğin sinesinde olduğu farketseler de, bunların pek azı, gençliğe verilen değeri bu kadar açık bir şekilde ifade etmiştir. Atatürk, “ülkenin geleceği gençliğe emanettir” beyanını kuşkusuzca vermiştir. Elbette ki, yetişkin insanların bir grup genç lidere koltuğu devretmesi konusunda birtakım güçlüklerle karşılaşılmıştır. Her bir neslin zamanı geldiğinde koltuğunu devredeceği gerçeği ile yüzleşmesi, Atatürk’e göre daha kolay gözükmüştür.

Atatürk/Youth and Sports Day

Youth and Sports Day in Turkey was instituted because of Atatürk's love and hope for the youth of Turkey.

Atatürk's words were: "Turkish Youth!

Your first duty is ever to preserve and defend the National independence, the Turkish Republic.

That is the only basis of your existence and your future.

This basis contains your most precious treasure."

He loved and honored youth, knowing that the future of Turkey is in the hands of the next generation.

Recognized by many as a visionary, his optimism was absolutely contagious.

His dedication to the positive direction of Turkey was evident by his attitude toward the people of the country, in particular the young people.

The day dedicated as Youth Day signified the beginning of the Turkish War of Independence.

In beginning the process of gaining sovereignty for the Turkish people, he valued youth at the very onset.

Few leaders have made their position known so clearly, though many realize on some level that their future lies within the bosom of its youth,

Atatürk made this statement without reservation—the future of his country belonged to the next generation.

Surely this was met with some resistance as the current adults find it hard to release the reins to a younger group of leaders.

As each generation comes face-to-face with the reality that the time has come, it did seem to come more easily to Atatürk.
