Hi everyone,
Please welcome with me Juan Rossi from Argentina. In need of a change Juan moved to New Zealand in 2010 and calls this beautiful place on earth now home.
In this episode, Juan shares his journey from Argentina to New Zealand, blending his passion for travel with his love of geography and adventure. He begins by offering a glimpse into his home country — not just the well-known aspects, but also unique details that might surprise listeners, like the fact that German is the second most spoken language per capita in Argentina.
After traveling within South America, Juan eventually set his sights on living abroad once he became more financially stable. With Canada and New Zealand as his top options, it was the easier visa process — and the breathtaking landscapes featured in The Lord of the Rings — that ultimately drew him to New Zealand. The scenery reminded him of his favorite place back home: Patagonia.
Juan moved to New Zealand in 2010, planning to stay if it felt right — and it did. Over the years, he’s explored Europe and continued his travels, but New Zealand always felt like home. The country’s laid-back, friendly culture seemed more aligned with his personality, and he’s now built a strong circle of friends. He reflects on the adjustment from Argentina’s warm and affectionate social norms — including hugging and kissing friends — to New Zealand’s more reserved approach, and how he’s found ways to connect through humor and openness.
Juan also shares a personal connection to The Lord of the Rings and the character Aragorn, especially the quote, “Not all those who wander are lost.” A fun twist: Viggo Mortensen, who played Aragorn, once lived in Argentina and speaks fluent Spanish — a detail that made the connection even more meaningful.
Looking ahead, Juan says he might one day return to Patagonia to retire, but for now, he’s enjoying life in New Zealand and staying open to wherever the journey leads.
