A hawkish three-dissent Fed hold sent the Dow to its worst day since April, flipping divergences from even to two-and-a-half-to-one bearish overnight, with the damage concentrated precisely in rate-sensitive financials, industrials and utilities.
The Signal
The Fed held rates but three members dissented in favor of a hike, and the bond market read it as the Fed falling behind on inflation. The ten year jumped sharply, and equities sold off hard: the Dow fell over eleven hundred points, its worst session since April of last year, while the Nasdaq lost close to two percent. Microsoft and Meta both reported after the close.
The Noise
Divergences flipped from roughly even to a lopsided two-and-a-half-to-one bearish, one of the sharpest single-session swings on record, concentrated precisely in the rate-sensitive complex: financials, industrials, and utilities. The broad trend has not broken, structure and flow still lean bullish, but confirmed candles stayed at zero bullish, meaning nothing has signaled a bottom yet.
Multi-Signal Confluence
SBA Communications, a cell-tower operator, was one of the few bright spots: shares ran hard into the summer and two signals turned bullish, price structure and a fresh money-flow divergence, ahead of its own earnings due in early August.
JPMorgan Chase, fresh off a record quarter two weeks ago, the highest profit in company history, still turned bearish on a fresh divergence and a stock modestly above fair value, right in the eye of the financials selloff.
General Dynamics beat comfortably this same morning, record backlog above a hundred thirty billion dollars, yet printed a confirmed bearish reversal candle on the close, a striking contrast with Northrop Grumman, flagged bullish on a similarly strong quarter just two days earlier.
