The poverty rate for single parents with children in the United States is thirty seven percent. The poverty rate for married couples with children is just seven percent. Being raised in a married family reduces child poverty by eighty-two percent. Brookings says boys are more affected than girls by the lack of a male role model in the family. Heritage says the principal cause of child poverty is the absence of married fathers in the home.
