The dates are out, and Karnataka is set to go to polls on May 10 and the political battle has already begun. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to the state, Congress says that Rahul Gandhi, in an act of defiance, will start his election campaign in Kolar, the same place where he made remarks for which he has been convicted of defamation and faces two years in jail. During the inauguration of an extension of the Delhi BJP headquarters, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on the opposition, especially the Congress. The time and the event coincided with the opposition's protest against the disqualification of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as MP. Hearing a clutch of petitions opposing the release of 11 people convicted of murders and gang-rape in the Bikis Bano case, the Supreme Court said, "So many languish in jail, how come these men were released? Are there uniform standards for release?" The two-judge bench said they will not be emotional and will strike a balance in delivering the judgment. On a day when the opposition came together to protest against the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from parliament, an eviction notice was served by the Lok Sabha Housing Committee to the Congress leader to leave his official residence - 12 Tughlaq Lane - within a month. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was found guilty and sentenced to two years in prison on Thursday in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's surname by a court in Gujarat's Surat. He was also granted bail for 30 days and allowed to appeal the decision. For the BJP, Rahul is a convict but for the Congress, a crusader. Pro-Khalistan protests continued for the second day in London. More policemen and barricades were installed outside the Indian High Commission in London ahead of the protest, in an apparent effort to prevent a repeat of the vandalism seen three days ago. The step came shortly after the police in Delhi removed traffic barricades outside the British High Commission. Thousands of posters targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, put up in various parts of Delhi, triggered a police crackdown in which 36 cases have been filed and six people have been arrested. Two of the arrested men own a printing press. But the case has never been the same when posters were put up against opposition parties. Is a writing on a wall such a 'crime'? Or is it sheer politics? 

 

The impasse in parliament continues despite an all-party meeting called by the speaker today to find a solution to the deadlock. Meanwhile, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi again wrote to the Lok Sabha Speaker requesting permission to respond to "totally baseless and unfair charges" levelled against him by senior Ministers in the ruling BJP.
