After 244 Years of Independence, What's Your Version of Being 'American'?

On July 4, the nation commemorates 244 years of independence from Britain and its official beginnings as a new, free nation. 

In many parts of the world, achieving national independence is cause for great celebration. But in the United States and its territories, well-choreographed, razzle-dazzle celebrations mock the truth of how this nation, and our national identity, came to be--and  in so many ways, still is.
