In today’s episode we talk with geographer Julie Klinger, from the University of Delaware, about the geography and geopolitics surrounding the exploitation of technology-critical elements, particularly rare earth elements. The conversation is based on Julie’s book, called Rare Earth Frontiers: From Terrestrial Subsoils to Lunar Landscapes, and follows closely three cases considered in the book: 1) the former cvasi-monopoly held by the Bayan Obo mine in northern China, 2) potential exploitations in the remote Amazon in Brazil, and 3) prospective plans for mining on the surface of the Moon. Among the topics that we touch on are the ways in which discourse–more than geology–shapes the current global geography and geopolitics of rare earth mining, how the exploitations are justified through particular uses of language (hinterland, frontier, etc), and how big projects are implemented without the wants, needs and desires of local people’s being taken into consideration.

In this episode we talk with comrade Effrosyni, a cooperative worker at the factory VioME, about factory occupation and workers’ self-management. In the first half of the episode we learn about the history leading up to the occupation and the first autonomous years at VioMe. Among the topics discussed are the existing connection with Argentinian comrades from the recovered factory movement, how VioMe was inspired by the Zapatista movement in Chiapas; the inner workings of the cooperative (how decisions are made for example), as well as the ongoing attempts to evict the workers from the property and the ways they manage to resist with the help of the broader community around the factory. In the second part, Effrosyni goes into more detail about the ways in which the workers converted the factory from its initial purpose of making building materials to soaps and cleaning products after the occupation, and the motivations behind this decision. We learn about interactions with other coops and how VioMe is embedded in the supply chain. Effrosyni also gives some advice for people facing a similar situation to the VioMe workers in 2013. At the end of the episode and in the description we discuss and link ways of supporting the coop at VioMe.

În prima parte a episodului aflăm mai multe despre evenimentele care au dus la ocuparea fabricii și despre primii ani în care VioMe a operat ca o fabrică autonomă. In this double episode, we talk with Emi, Oana, Andreea and Gabi about trauma, abuse, madness and neurodiversity, and the way these are represented in the animation She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. In this second part, we focus on madness and neurodiversity. After we go through some basic definitions in regard to autism, ADHD, borderline and others, we try to tie in everything with our own personal experiences. Afterwards, we discuss how all of these are represented in She-Ra, especially through the characters Entrapta and Catra, but also others, like Razz, Adora, Mara and Scorpia. At the ending, we tie in the topics with the discussion from the previous episode, by talking about how trauma is fundamentally intertwined with the experience of being a neurodivergent and/or mad person in a normative society.
