Welcome to the Family Business Next Generation Podcast.
If you run or are involved in a family business, you probably know this:
beyond organization charts, strategies, or market decisions, our companies are also shaped by something less visible.
They are shaped by their history.
By the personality of the founder.
By the influence of former generations.
By relationships between brothers and sisters.
By key events — sometimes even accidents — that happened along the company’s journey.
In other words, what happens in our family organizations is often driven by deeper dynamics.
Things we can feel… but sometimes struggle to explain.
For example:
· tensions that seem to come back again and again
· problems that persist despite the right decisions
In this episode, we explore these invisible dynamics — and how leaders can develop a systemic approach to better understand and navigate them.
In my experience, this systemic perspective can be a real game changer.
As a CEO or as a family member involved in the business, it can help you:
· resolve complex situations,
· make decisions with a deeper understanding of what is really happening,
· and create the conditions for your company to remain healthy over the long term.
Let me give you a quick example from my work with a client.
During a coaching process, we discovered that the founder of the company — almost 90 years ago — had a very particular relationship with money.
And little by little it became clear that the company’s persistent difficulty to generate profits was somehow linked to that legacy.
It was as if there was an invisible glass ceiling that the organization could not break — until the team became aware of this inherited dynamic.
I first explored this topic in a previous episode, in December, with Vincent Monziols, CEO of Tournaire, who has developed a very systemic way of leading his company.
In this episode, the intention is to go even deeper.
And for that conversation, I could hardly imagine a better guest.
My guest is one of the leading international specialists in this field.
I am delighted to welcome John Whittington, founder of the Coaching Constellations approach, which applies a systemic perspective to organizations, leadership teams, and family businesses.
For more than twenty years, he has worked with leaders and organizations around the world, helping them see what is really at play in the systems they belong to.
He founded Coaching Constellations in 2009 and is the author of the book Systemic Coaching and Constellations, now in its third edition.
Today, Coaching Constellations has become an international training organization offering systemic coaching programs in many countries. In recent years, John has increasingly focused on founders and family businesses.
