Training 4 Influence

Lessons From Burnout w/ Carol Plant

Listen Later

In this episode Tammy will be talking to Carol Plant about her 15 years experience as a probation officer. Carol shares her personal story about how overwhelming stress affected her ability to effectively support a service user and, as a result, made her realise the importance of emotional resilience. They discuss: why you must speak up at the first signs of stress, the need to dismantle the ‘get on with it’ attitude to create an open culture of support, and how, since then, she’s learnt to maintain her emotional resilience by forming healthy coping mechanisms.

Welcome to series 3 of the Training 4 Influence Podcast. This series, as requested by you, our listeners, will be focused on emotional resilience, how to build and maintain it, and why it’s so important for those working in the criminal justice, social care and charity sector.

Without emotional resilience frontline professionals are at risk from suffering from burnout, vicarious trauma and significant mental health issues - we’ll be sitting down with guests, in different job roles, to hear real stories of both avoiding burnout and rebuilding after it. Our aim is to share positive thoughts and ideas that will inspire, protect and motivate frontline professionals.

Carol Plant is a business and public speaking coach, and professional actress. She works with service-based professionals to overcome their fears of public speaking and subsequently grow their businesses.

Carol is a qualified coach, mentor & trainer, with a "no nonsense" approach but always with humour, love and lots more.

Her clients describe her as having a "refreshing approach with techniques that really work". Techniques that she draws from her career as a professional actress and the 15 years she spent working for the probation service, rehabilitating offenders and assessing and training 100s of probation staff.

We hope you enjoy listening to this discussion about why, having both worked in pressurised roles within criminal justice, Tammy and Carol believe that speaking up and asking for help is key to maintaining emotional resilience.
