  • What is the Queen's Favourite pen?

The tragic news that Queen Elizabeth II had passed away not so long ago signaled the beginning of a time of mourning in the United Kingdom as well as in many other nations across the globe. After hearing the devastating news, immediate action was taken to set into place the succession of King Charles III and the promotion of Prince William to the position of Prince of Wales.

There was a great deal of journalistic coverage of the events that took place in the days following the Queen's death.

There was also a great deal of discussion about the new King's problems with his fountain pen at various ceremonies that took place around the nation to commemorate his succession to the kingdom.

During the formal ceremony of succession, several dignitaries signed documents indicating their acceptance of duties and to bear witness to the occasion. We received questions through email, live chat, and social media from individuals wanting to know which pens were being used.

Each of the witnesses was given a pen, which appeared to be a Pilot V Pen made in Japan. The Pilot V Pen is a disposable fountain pen that is both very affordable and dependable, but it is also possible that it is not very environmentally friendly; for this reason, we do not offer this particular model. Pilot is responsible for the production of a wide variety of high-quality fountain pens, all of which can be refilled, in addition to an impressive collection of widely used premium inks under the Iroshuzuku brand name.

  • Does fountain pen water damage?

It is only fitting that a decent fountain pen of great quality receives a certain amount of care and attention, one component of which is cleaning. We have compiled a step-by-step instruction on how to clean every component of your fountain pen, including how to dry it correctly and what cleaning supplies to use. There are a few things that, if done, may cause harm to your pen; thus, it is imperative that you carefully adhere to our specialized instructions in order to keep your pen in pristine shape.

When was the last time you gave your fountain pen a good cleaning?

It is essential to give your fountain pen a thorough cleaning on a regular basis in order to maintain a reliable and smooth flow of ink. Every two to three weeks, or sooner if you use your pen more often and need to replace the ink more frequently, you should clean your fountain pen. If you use your pen more frequently, you should clean it more frequently. In general, the rule of thumb is that you should clean your fountain pen whenever you change your ink, particularly if you plan on using a different color of ink, and you should also clean it if you don't plan on using your pen for a while.

Additionally, you should clean your pen if you don't plan on using it for a while. It is essential to clean your pen well before putting it away for storage in order to prevent the ink from drying out.

How to Take Care of Your Prismatic Pen

You will find a detailed, step-by-step tutorial on how to clean the different components of your fountain pen, such as the pen converter and the nib, further down on this page.

What You Should Use To Clean Your Pen

It should not be too difficult to clean your pen; all you will need is some water and kitchen roll. However, there are certain things that you should be aware of about what you should not use to clean your pen. It is not suggested to use warm water on your fountain pen nib since doing so might cause internal components to get damaged. The water from the faucet works well for cleaning pens and doesn't typically create too many problems, but water with a high mineral content might disrupt the flow of the ink, which can cause the ink to dry out more quickly than you would want. If your fountain pen is really clogged up with ink and you need something other than water to shift it, you could add a teaspoon of household ammonia or vinegar to the water when soaking the nib and this will work just as well as purchasing a cleaning solution designed specifically for fountain pens. However, you can purchase cleaning solutions designed specifically for fountain pens. Ammonia, on the other hand, has the potential to corrode some metals; thus, it is not suggested that you use this product if your pen is composed of brass, aluminum, or copper.

  • Why is my fountain pen not smooth?

Because of the limited flow of ink, fountain pens may sometimes produce writing that is dry or scratchy. The following is a list of suggestions or procedures that may be taken to correct this issue so that your pen writes as it should.

How exactly do I put ink into a fountain pen that has a converter style?

    pen with a flush mechanism

First Step: Empty the Ink from the Fountain Pen

It is possible that a clogged or partly clogged feed system is the cause of the pen not writing smoothly, regardless of whether the pen is new or old. It is possible for brand new pens to have sediment in them, while the ink in old pens might dry up over time, causing the feed mechanism to get clogged (it is best to clean out fountain pens when they are not being used). The feed of a fountain pen should always be flushed with warm water before using it for the first time, regardless of how old or fresh the pen is. It is important to note that the procedure for cleaning a fountain pen with a cartridge/converter or one with a piston may differ significantly depending on the kind of pen you are using. The removal of any minute particles or dried ink from the system may be accomplished by flushing the pen with warm water. You might even try giving the pen a flush if you want it to be extra cleaner.

  • Why is my fountain pen so scratchy?

Someone who prefers to use a fountain pen often does so for more than one reason. For many, nothing beats the sensual experience of writing with a pen on paper. In contrast, it's not very enjoyable to write with a scratchy nib. This other sensation is common among frequent users of fountain pens. I am often asked whether there is anything that can be done at home to cure a scratchy nib, despite the fact that we provide our own maintenance services and free nib tuning on each pen or nib unit acquired from us. The answer might be yes, but it worries me because treatments often cause more issues than they resolve. The following is based on my own experience fixing a scratchy writing instrument.

It's likely that some form of damage was done to a nib that was before producing nice, smooth writing and has now become scratchy. Misalignment is by far the most prevalent cause of this problem. Tine alignment may shift if dropped or bumped. The first step is to check this. One of the tips will be ahead of the other on the paper due to the misalignment, revealing the sharp inner edge of the tipping. A steady stream of ink may also be disrupted by this. Those of us with mere mortal sight need a ten-power loupe to make out the misaligned tilting. The next steps are only for the courageous, who understand that passing the pen to someone else is necessary to fix the situation.

It might also refer to a "trainer pen," as opposed to a "writer," in this case.

Keep the loupe near your eye and the pen's point aimed towards the loupe.

Everything takes place within touching distance of your face. Look for the "iridium" forms to be closely spaced and in a symmetrical arrangement with the points at the same level. (A flexible nib will contact the paper, whereas a hard one will leave a little space.) If you notice that one side is more than five percent higher than the other, you may check the tips by lifting the lower side with your fingernail. If it rises by the same amount on the opposite side, plus an additional 5% above the first side, then you know it can be moved. A nib is said to be well-balanced if this happens and the tines are of the hard kind.

You have likely identified the source of scratchiness if one side is consistently and noticeably higher than the other.

    This nib is just right.

In such instance, check to make sure the nib is in the middle of the feed. If put aside, the solution may be straightforward. Carefully realign the nib with the feed. To avoid damaging the tine, it is best to push from its center, where the curvature meets the shoulder, rather than from its shoulder or its tip. If you find that you have gone too far, flip the pen over and press lightly from the opposite side, being careful to move the nib just a little distance. You'll need to do this again and again until the slit is directly in the middle of the feed. (Some nibs and feeds work better when they aren't perfectly aligned, but that's a topic for another day.)

  • How do you revive a dried out fountain pen?

Writing with a fountain pen, which is one of the fountain pen's many delights, is a pleasure in and of itself. Therefore, a writer's biggest fear is having a fountain pen that has run out of ink. If they are old or haven't been used for a long time, fountain pens might get dry over time. When you go to write with your fountain pen, expecting the nib to go smoothly over the paper, only to discover that the ink has dried up in the pen, you may find yourself wondering whether the pen can still be saved. The good news is that there are just a few simple actions you need to do in order to restore your dry fountain pen. Because the solution relies on the underlying reason of the dryness in the fountain pen, it's possible that you won't need to follow all of the procedures to cure it. In addition, if you are just getting started with fountain pens, you could be interested in perusing our selection of the most effective low-cost fountain pens for novices.

Getting Your Dry Fountain Pen Working Again Step 1: Get Ready

Prepare the area where you will be working by placing down some newspaper or paper towels before you start attempting to restore your pen. In addition, you should take precautions to safeguard your clothing and put on a pair of rubber gloves to avoid getting ink on your skin.

Step 2: Using the wet cartridge, flush the dry fountain pen.

It does not matter how old the pen is; a blocked fountain pen may cause the nib to get dry over time. For this reason, it is very necessary to clean the pen whenever it is not being used. If you believe that blockage is the reason of your fountain pen not writing properly, the first thing you should do is try flushing it with warm water. The most effective method for doing this is to unscrew the pen, take out the cartridge, and then run warm water through the feed and the nib of the pen to flush out any sediment or dried ink that may have accumulated. Continue reading for some pointers on how to clean an old fountain pen if you are interested in repurposing an older writing instrument.

  • Can drawing on yourself with pen hurt you?

Drawing on yourself with a pen is a popular way to express creativity, especially among young people. However, many people question whether it is safe to do so. In this article, we will discuss the potential health risks of drawing on your skin with a pen, and we will provide some safer alternatives for those who wish to express themselves in this way.

The first thing to consider is the chemical composition of pens.

Most pens contain chemicals that are toxic if ingested, and some of these chemicals can also be harmful to the skin. Pens can contain a variety of different chemicals, including alcohol, ammonia, and formaldehyde.

Drawing on your skin with a pen can cause skin irritation, especially if you have sensitive skin. The chemicals in the pen can cause an allergic reaction, which can result in redness, itching, and swelling. This is more likely to occur if you draw on your skin for an extended period or if you use a pen with a harsher ink formula.

Ink poisoning is a more serious concern when it comes to drawing on your skin with a pen.

While it is rare, ink poisoning can occur if you ingest the ink or if it gets into an open wound. Symptoms of ink poisoning include nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. In severe cases, ink poisoning can lead to seizures or even death.

Drawing on your skin with a pen can also increase the risk of infection. When you draw on your skin, you create small abrasions that can provide an entry point for bacteria and other pathogens. This is especially true if you are drawing on your skin with a pen that has been used by someone else.

If you want to express yourself by drawing on your skin, there are safer alternatives to using a pen. For example, you could use non-toxic markers or temporary tattoos. These are specifically designed for use on the skin and are less likely to cause irritation or infection.

  • Will fountain pen ink fade?

Fountain pen inks are susceptible to fading, much like watercolour paints. But you shouldn't let this deter you in any way. What I do to improve and protect my artworks created using fountain pen ink is as follows:

Paper: Use substantial paper stocks that are of a high grade (Bockingford, Arches, Waterford Saunders). The greater the thickness, the better. The inks will be absorbed even farther into the fibers of the paper if you use them. It takes thinner sheets longer to fade.

When an artwork is complete, I cover it with a coat of water-based varnish and let it dry. Be careful not to lose your mind! Applying the varnish should be done very carefully, and the artwork should be kept at least 50 centimeters away from the can. Let a tiny amount of fine spray settle, then let it to dry. Repeat the technique five to seven more times. Gradually build up the varnish, and make sure it never completely covers the artwork! If this does not happen, the ink may return to the solution and begin to flow. There is a choice between a matte and a glossy finish. A sample for testing that was made in 2012 is seen in the larger image. The section on the left has had the varnish applied to it. The part on the right has not been varnished, and as a result, it is beginning to lose its color. (Today's picture was taken). Take a look as how the varnish maintains the stunning gold effect that the bleach produced.

  • Can you drink fountain pen ink?

The majority of people, when they conceive of someone being poisoned by ink, picture them drinking ink from a pen. In the event that you have accidentally ingested ink, for example by biting on the end of a pen and getting ink in your mouth, there is no need for you to be excessively worried.

"Ball-point pens, felt-tip pens, and fountain pens contain so little ink that there is not enough to cause poisoning if it is sucked from a pen," said a report written by the World Health Organization (WHO). It's possible that some inks may make your mouth feel uncomfortable. It is possible that ingesting large quantities of ink directly from the bottle might cause irritation, although no cases of severe poisoning have been documented.

If you accidentally ingested ink, the World Health Organization recommends flushing your system with water and says there is no need to take any more action.

Signs and symptoms of ink poisoning

Because it comes in such a little amount and is believed to have a low toxicity level, ink from pens, markers, highlighters, and other writing instruments is often not a cause for worry about poisoning.

Typical symptoms include a discolored tongue or skin, and while it's unusual, you may also have some slight stomach distress.

If ink from any of these sources has been accidentally ingested, it is imperative to seek medical assistance due to the high concentration of ink found in printer cartridges and stamp pads.

Toxic effects from ink left on the skin

Drawing with ink on your skin won't get you sick with ink poisoning. Although it has the potential to leave a temporary stain on your skin, ink will not poison you.

  • Do pen inks expire?

If you're anything like the other people who use fountain pens, you probably have more ink than you could ever use in your whole life. And why on earth not? Because there are so many fantastic inks available to use these days, it would be almost hard not to purchase a new bottle every now and again. Because there is so much ink, there is cause for alarm among a great number of individuals. Does ink have a shelf life? This gives rise to other questions. How long may ink be stored before it becomes contaminated and unsafe to use? What are some signs that the ink has lost its quality? All of these are topics that will be discussed in depth in this essay.

    What exactly is ink?

Before going any further, it would be beneficial to have a basic understanding of what ink is. The fundamental component in ink is distilled water. Depending on the kind of ink we're discussing, the color in the ink originates from either pigments or dyes. Dye-based inks are also an option. In spite of this, a bottle of ink contains more than simply water and color by itself.

Have you ever taken the time to observe that water has a lower viscosity compared to ink? When you next clean your fountain pen, fill it with water and hold it with the nib pointing down. This will ensure that all of the ink is removed. Some pens may begin leaking water after they have been used for a while. To our great relief, this does not occur while using ink. Because of this, ink contains a surfactant that makes it more viscous and raises its surface tension in order to prevent it from leaking out of pens.

Ink, in addition to containing a number of other components, also includes compounds that are antibacterial. These are designed to inhibit the development of germs that, if they were to get into your pen, would wreak havoc and have the ability to infect and ruin several fountain pens!

Keeping ink bottles in the box they came in is an effective way to shield the ink inside from exposure to light.

  • How easy is it to damage a fountain pen nib?

Choose Nibs Made of Solid Gold.
Solid gold fountain pen nibs are generally more dependable than their cheaper steel counterparts, which can easily bend or corrode and are difficult or impossible to repair. In contrast, solid gold fountain pen nibs are generally long-lasting and durable, and they can be used for the entirety of one's writing career. However, there are several fundamental procedures that you can take to ensure the longest possible life for your preferred solid gold nib.

Put caps on your pens, or use pen pillows or racks, whatever you want.

Naturally, dropping a pen, especially while it is uncapped, presents the highest risk of nib breakage. This is especially true when the cap is removed. You should always keep your pens covered while they are not in use, and if you are using a clipless pen like the Nakaya Cigar-style pens, you should also think about using a pen cushion or rack so that your pen does not move about on its own and fall off the table. In most cases, we are able to fix gold nibs that have been broken as a result of falling; please see the sections devoted to our services and repairs for more information.

When you are writing, use a light touch.

The application of excessive pressure while writing is the second most significant factor that might damage a nib. The majority of fountain pens only need a little touch while writing, and pressing down too forcefully on them may cause the tines to expand and lead to other types of damage as well. It is not necessary to have a touch as light as a feather in order to operate a fountain pen; nonetheless, keeping in mind to apply less pressure when writing may help you avoid having to see the nib doctor.
